Simon Sinek defines authentic leadership as accurately representing who you are externally as you are internally. An authentic leader ensures their organization's outward presentation matches its internal reality. This encourages employees to invest more in the company's success and creates loyalty by meeting and exceeding customer expectations through consistently delivering on the experience promised.

Authentic leadership was coined by Bill George in his 2003 book during the Enron and WorldCom scandals. It is based on being genuine, earning trust through honesty, and staying true to one's own personality and values. There are four key elements: being true to yourself in how you work without facade; being motivated by a larger purpose beyond ego; making values-based decisions rather than popularity-seeking ones; and achieving sustainable long-term results. To develop authentic leadership requires understanding oneself, leading with compassion, drawing on experiences, building strong relationships, and having an openness to learn and grow. This study examined the relationship between emotional intelligence and authentic leadership in Naval Special Warfare leadership. 168 retired, separated, and active duty Navy SEALs completed surveys measuring their emotional intelligence and authentic leadership. The results found no statistically significant relationship between overall emotional intelligence or any dimension of emotional intelligence with authentic leadership. Additionally, there was no significant relationship found between age and emotional intelligence or between age and authentic leadership. The study aimed to determine if emotional intelligence could predict authentic leadership among Navy SEALs.

They found that (1) leaders' self-perceptions of authentic leadership did not always align with followers' perceptions, (2) women leaders and those with frequent follower contact were seen as more authentic, and (3) authentic leadership positively impacted followers' psychological capital and engagement, which in turn boosted psychological capital. The study provided insight into antecedents and outcomes of authentic leadership, though future longitudinal research is needed.
