HSC 410 Presentation
Jory Del Cecato
 Health is ever changing and constantly being
redefined through many innovations that change the
way we live from day to day
 When thinking about health and wellness, one can
come to the conclusion that this means the overall
complete state of physical, mental, and social well-
being and what action the individual takes to meet
those standards.
 Health and wellness can also generally refer to the
individual’s promotion of healthy behaviors to
achieve their full potential and reduce the risks of
disease through self-direction and motivation.
What is Aging and
Health?
 Grandmothers friend who is currently a 73-year-old
Hispanic woman who resides in the small town of
Newark, Ohio.
 Growing up, she described her life as simplistic with an
old fashioned way of thinking.
 Exercise was always included in the day due to the
sheer amount of vigorous work on the farm that had to
be completed.
 Back then, the importance of a college degree was not
significant as many people were able to find great jobs
without continuing their education past high school.
 Economic hardship was a major problem as families
who were farmers were forced to give up everything
they worked so hard for and file bankruptcy as their
farming businesses failed at an alarming rate.
Background
 While working on a farm, the one thing that
she feels most accomplished about is the sense
of character that was developed through hard
work
 She made the point that it allows you to
develop a sense of appreciation for everything
that we take for granted in life
 Got a great sense of satisfaction in knowing
that the end result could benefit the community
as a whole
Accomplishments
 Asking this particular question drew some negative
emotions as my interviewee endured the ethnic
hardships that plagued the country before the civil
rights movement.
 Being Hispanic and living in the United States, she
described the community she lived in as “close
minded” and unwilling to accept change.
 Judging from her reaction, I could tell that she was very
frustrated and aggravated about being a minority in
the United States.
 Overall, I can tell that there is a significant impact from
being a minority in her eyes because she truly believes
that she has missed out on many opportunities in life
with her ethnicity being the deciding factor in those
situations
Life as an Ethnic Minority
 Today, the woman I interviewed is a very active
woman in the community who participates in
multiple organizations and does much volunteer
work for the community
 She emphasized what a pleasure it has been to be
able to give back to others while bettering herself as
a person in this world.
 Through all the volunteer work, she told me that she
is constantly meeting and working with people of all
ages on a daily basis to support a common goal
which gives her a sense of accomplishment.
 The emotional and social support gained by
volunteering has served a great purpose and created
a lasting impression to improve quality of life
Contact With Others
 By building relationships with others through
her volunteer work, she has developed a
support system that has not failed her once in
her older years.
 Although she lives alone and has some
disabilities that hinder her life slightly, she is
confident that she is able to handle the task of
taking care of herself because her support
system is always there to fill in the gaps when
trouble arises which allows her to live
independently and without worry.
Meeting Her Needs
 People are always wanting to do things for her
simply because they assume that she is not capable
of doing it herself.
 Although she is flattered by those who want to help
out, she also feels frustration that comes from being
fully capable to do things on her own, without the
help of other.
 She feels that her age gives off a negative
assumption that she is helpless and unable to
complete tasks on her own
 She still practices productive aging in her older
years and uses her strengths in order to meet her
needs and contribute to society in the ways that she
is able to
Treatment as an Older
Adult
 When describing what it is like to live with these
conditions, she mentioned that it was a total shock
when she first heard the diagnosis.
 As she got older, she described life as learning to
cope with the different things that come your way
 Although she is a diabetic and has a heart condition,
she says that it does not bother her as much
anymore because she has accepted it and moved on
 Today, she receives healthcare benefits through a
family member and has all of her medical needs met
at a low cost
Living With Chronic
Disease
 She believes that learning to accept and cope with
your health issues can save a lot of stress and
anxiety.
 Although no one wants to have health issues, she
agrees that young adults should be more aware of
their bodies because the small things we endure as
young adults can turn into serious issues as we get
older.
 She was quick to regret certain lifestyle choices and
warned me about going down the path that she
took. In the end, I was able to acknowledge that she
feels remorse that her current condition could have
been avoided by making different decisions in her
younger years
Dealing with Current
Issues
 Though it is not often that I am able to sit down with
an elder and talk about these subjects, I was able to get
an excellent perspective from an individual who has
endured a lot which I can translate into my own life.
 This interview has taught me that this world can be a
cruel place and that life is way too short to spend your
time stressed and depressed over the way others treat
you and how they interfere with your pursuit of
happiness
 . Success does not have to be measured by the amount
of money that you make. At the conclusion of this
interview, I found that pursuing and fulfilling your
hopes and dreams can make you the richest person in
the world
