HARRY POTTER
AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE
Famous Fictional Character
is a Joseph Campbell Hero!
An ordinary boy
Baby orphan Harry Potter was
left on the doorstep of his Aunt
and Uncle's home by a
powerful and magical
headmaster named Albus
Dumbledore.
Earlier that same evening, the
evil Lord Voldemort had killed
his parents and then
subsequently disappeared.
Living with his muggle relatives, Harry is abused by Aunt
Petunia and Uncle Vernon. Forced to grow up under the
cupboard under the stairs, the orphan child played second
fiddle to their piggish son, Dudley.
Muggles are non-magical folk –
regular humans like you and me.
On his 11th
birthday, Harry
received an
acceptance letter to
the Hogwarts School of
Witchcraft and
Wizardry. The young
boy learned he
was a wizard!
“Hogwarts is my home!”
exclaimed the young wizard.
DANGER FOLLOWS
For the next three years, Harry faced emotional and
physical challenges testing his bravery, magical
abilities and the goodness within.
During Harry's first year
at Hogwarts, Lord
Voldemort took over
Professor Quirrell's
body appearing as a
face on the back of
the teachers' head.
Harry defeated them
both because he was
protected by his
mothers' love -
something Voldemort
had never received.
In his second year,
Voldemort re-
appeared at
Hogwarts as a
version of his
younger self
possessing a diary
that contained a
part of his soul. Harry
managed to destroy
the diary and
Voldemort once
more in the
Chamber of Secrets.
In his third year, Sirius
Black - dangerous
inmate who escaped
from prison - was
implicated in the death
of Harry’s parents
death. Black tracked
down Harry to
Hogwarts, and he was
revealed to be Harry's
godfather and sincerely
innocent. Not having an
opportunity to prove his
innocence to the
authorities, Black was
forced into hiding.
When Harry does not
attend Hogwarts, he
has to live with the
Dursleys during the
summer.
Occasionally, he
stays at his friend Ron
Weasley's house -
whose family are all
wizards. Otherwise,
Harry is not allowed
to perform magic
around his aunt,
uncle and cousin.
Now, 14 years old, will Harry
finally have a normal
semester at school?
ABSOLUTELY NOT.
This year, Hogwarts invites
two foreign wizarding schools to stay
for the school term
Beaubaxtons
Academy of
Magic
Durmstrang
Institute
Hogwarts also welcomes a new teacher
Mad-Eye Moody to instruct the Defense
Against the Dark Arts class.
One student from each school will be selected
to compete in
The Triwizard Tournament!
Riches and glory
await the victor!
Students submit their name into the goblet of fire.
The official participants will be chosen at random.
Guess that means Harry is out, right?
WRONG.
An age line prevents students under the age of
seventeen from entering.
Fleur Delacour
The Participants are Chosen
Viktor Krum Cedric Diggory
AND
HARRY
POTTER
?!
Potter Becomes an Outcast
Harry swears he did not enter
his name in the goblet of fire.
No one believes him –
especially his best friend Ron
Weasley. Fellow students are
jealous and support Cedric
Diggory to win.
Rita Skeeter, a
journalist for The
Daily
Prophet, began
covering the events
of the Triwizard
Tournament. She
melodramatically
reported on Potter's
state of mind and
childhood making
him an even bigger
target for bullying at
Hogwarts.
A binding magical contract makes it impossible for
Harry to be excused from the tournament.
He has no other choice but to compete.
The teachers are not very upset.
The participants do not
know what kind of
challenges they will
face. They must unlock
riddles to prepare
against their
competitors.
Harry’s other best friend
Hermione Granger helps
him prepare practicing
spells, jinxes, and
charms.
THE FIRST TASK
On a long walk in the night Harry wears his invisibility
cloak into the Forbidden Forest. Hagrid, a Hogwarts
teacher and caretaker of magical creatures, as well
as friend, secretly shows Harry the first task.
In a rocky pit, the participants must capture a golden
egg the dragon is protecting.
The egg contains a riddle for the second challenge.
DRAGONS!
No weapons are allowed to be used except wands. Mad-
Eye Moody hints for Harry to use his ability to fly on his
broom.
A few days later when the first tournament begins, Harry is
the last to participate.
In flight, his dragon breaks free from its chains and chases
Harry into the sky.
Flying around Hogwarts Harry manages to lead the dragon
to crash into the ground.
Free and safe, Harry captures the golden egg.
Friends Again
Hogwarts begins rallying support behind Harry after his
win. Ron realizes Harry would’ve never volunteered to
be in such a dangerous game.
Hogwarts Dances The
Night Away
At the Yule Ball,
Cedric Diggory
helps Harry
prepare for the
next challenge;
tells him to take
his dragon egg
into the bath.
Taking a bath, a ghost Moaning Myrtle tells Harry to
put the egg in the water and listen to the riddle.
Hermione and Harry solve that the second task will take place in
the black lake. He must stay underwater for an hour. Harry’s
good friend and house elf Dobby helps Harry choose gillyweed
to swim with gills and fins.
THE SECOND TASK
Friends of the participants are being held hostage by
merpeople. In order to qualify for the next
challenge, they must be found and released.
Harry finds the hostages, and tries to save Ron and
Hermione - but can only rescue one.
Viktor saves Hermione, who have grown close.
Cedric saves Cho Chang, who he’s dating. Fleur was
badly injured and couldn’t save her sister. Running
out of time, Harry frees both Ron and Fleur’s sister.
Harry is attacked by the merpeople and barely
manages to cast a spell to ascend to shore
Harry would’ve have come in last place except he is
awarded with second place for strong moral fiber –
rescuing other students when he didn’t have to.
THE THIRD TASK
Harry works on spells until the evening of the third
task. No one knows what the challenge will be.
The participants gather with the rest of the school
discover an enormous maze at their Quidditch pitch
– a field where Hogwarts plays a wizarding sport.
Harry and Cedric
enter the maze first.
Creatures in the maze
attack Cedric. When
he runs into
Harry, Cedric warns
him.
Fleur is mysteriously
disqualified. Victor has
been bewitched to
attack Cedric, who
makes it out alive.
Harry and Cedric are
the only participants in
the maze.
A sphinx is set in front of
the tournament cup. It
has a riddle to be
solved.
Harry solves his riddle at
the same time Cedric
does. A giant spider
tries to attack them.
Getting rid of the giant spider, Harry and Cedric are
just out of reach from the cup. They try to convince
the other one that they’ve earn the right to win.
They agree to both reach for it
at the same time.
The goblet is a portkey - a bewitched object that
transports people to another location.
Harry and Cedric land in a mysterious cemetery.
A few second later, Cedric is killed by an
unseen presence. And, Harry is trapped
against a statue.
One of Voldemort’s loyal followers Peter Pettigrew
brutally cuts Harry’s arm. His blood is needed for an
official sacrifice.
HE WHO MUST NOT
BE NAMED RETURNS
Voldemort calls for his followers called
deatheaters, who appear in the cemetery. He doubts
their loyalty before freeing Harry from the statue and
challenging him to battle. Voldemort wants them to
witness him kill Harry.
In a vicious wand battle, the spirits of Harry’s parents
and Cedric Diggory spring forth to protect him.
They give Harry just enough time to distract
Voldemort, so he can run back to the port key and
return to Hogwarts with Cedric’s body.
Upon reaching Hogwarts, the teachers and students
gather around Cedric’s body and Harry crying over
him. Harry is whisked away by Mad-Eye Moody to his
office chambers.
At first the teacher looks to be helping Harry recover
from what he just experienced. Then, Mad-Eye Moody
reveals that he knows Cedric died in the graveyard –
something Harry did not reveal!
Mad-Eye Moody turns vicious and almost attacks Harry.
Dumbledore and two other teachers arrive to save him. A
loyal Voldemort follower Barty Crouch Jr. has disguised
himself as Mad-Eye Moody. Crouch was trying to help
Voldemort kill Harry through the triwizard tournament.
Dumbledore leads Harry to his office and asks what
happened in the graveyard. Harry swears that
Voldemort has returned, and Dumbledore knows that
he is telling the truth.
After Harry’s friends comfort him, Dumbledore later
addresses the schools about Cedric’s death. He
announces that Voldemort has returned. He also
reminds the students that no matter where they come
from, all wizards are the same.
Harry still receives the prizes for winning the triwizard
tournament – wizarding money called galleons. He
gives them to Ron’s older brothers Fred and George
to open their own joke shop.
Harry must face going back to the Dursleys feeling
guilty about Cedric’s death. Hagrid, who has become
a father figure to Harry, tells him that whatever
happens he will be able to handle it.
Harry with Ron and Hermione travel on the Hogwarts
Express to London. Though returning to the normal
muggle world with the Dursleys, Harry has hope for the
future despite Voldemort’s return.
