How to Teach What You
     Don't Know
                Kristine Kenney, MLIS
Information Services Manager, Palatine Public Library

“To begin with the end in mind
means to start with a clear
understanding of your destination. It
means to know where you’re
going...so that the steps you take are
always in the right direction.”

Stephen Covey
The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People
How do you do that?
Gather Information

What types of questions are people asking?

                   What is important to know?

What concepts are hardest for you to understand?
“If you don’t know where you’re
 going, you’ll get there every
 time!”
What is worth understanding?
Where do I find the information?
                      Where do I begin?

Know your objectives

        Stay organized

   Keep focused
Organize as you Learn
“First comes thought; then
organization of that thought,
into ideas and plans; then
transformation of those plans
into reality.”

Napolean Hill
But I’m freaking out!
Spend Time on What you Do Know
Build your credibility
Reduce your anxiety
?
Allow time for questions
But I don’t want them
  to ask questions!
“Questions focus our thinking.”

Charles Connolly
You know more than you think

You can always find the answer later

Let other students answer the question
But I don’t have time to
       do all this!
Ask others for ...
           advice
         assistance
           input
            help
“Successful people are always
looking for opportunities to
help others.”

Brian Tracy
Don’t reinvent
Consider a lecture
rather than a hands-on class
...just remember your objectives.
Consider inviting a guest speaker
They deliver expertise in their field
They offer variety to patrons
They give you a break from having
to teach something you don’t know.
They provide a way for you to partner
  with businesses in your community.
Is a class really necessary?
What about a webinar?

             What about a handout?

What about self study?
Whatever you choose..
in the end...
