How to play nice on the internet
1. How to play nice on the Internet
The Golden Rules of Netiquette
Wendy Hall 2012
2. What is Netiquette?
“The rules of etiquette that apply when
communicating over computer networks,
especially the Internet”
Accessed 6th April 2012 http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/netiquette
3. Online communication
• Within modern society, online communication has
become an everyday occurrence for many people –
regardless of age, location or interests
• Communication within the online environment
requires the same level of respect and courtesy of
“face to face” interaction
• The following slides describes some of the ways to
“Play nice on the internet!”
4. Respectful behaviour
• Good questions to ask yourself are:
– “Would I say that to the other person’s face”
– “Really ……. would you??”
• Remember there is a real person on the other end
of that computer…
– Important to adhere to the same level of common
courtesy that you follow in the “face to face” world
– Think about what you are typing / writing
– You are not anonymous – so be careful what you say
– Read it properly BEFORE you send it
5. Clear Communication
• Not everyone uses abbreviations, SMS talk or swears
– so please avoid using these
• Using ALL CAPS can be interpreted as online yelling –
so make sure you haven't left your CAPS lock on!
• Forums are a great way to share your thoughts and
ideas
6. Forums
• Make sure you read the whole forum before
jumping in - think before you type!
• Forums can often include interesting and diverse
discussions
• Try and keep your communications on topic
• Remember other readers need to understand your
comments
• Long winded comments can bore participants –
keep things short and clear
7. Don’t Agree?
• Everyone has the right to their own opinion
• Certain comments can “spice up” the conversation
• However, you must be respectful of other people’s
beliefs and cultures
• Don’t fuel the fire adversely
• It’s important to express yourself but first ask
yourself the question:
– “How can I say this respectfully?”
• It’s ok to agree to disagree – that’s what makes us
different
8. Don’t always get things right?
• At times we all make mistakes…
– Whether it is spelling or missing the point of the
discussion
– We are human!
– Don’t be ashamed – and don’t ridicule others for
making mistakes
– Please don’t insult your fellow forum
participants
9. Lots of knowledge?
• This is fantastic
• Please feel free to share your relevant knowledge and
examples of connecting real life experiences with the
subject
However
– Please respect other people if they have had a different / no
experience
– Don’t be a cyber hog or a Troll
– Other people may also wish to contribute
