How to make serious stories shareable on social mediaEric Athas
We’ve heard this a lot lately: Fun stories, not serious stories, work on social media. But we’ve found otherwise. You can shape serious stories to make them shareable and more informative for the public.
Headlines make or break the reach of your digital stories. Without a headline that promises something specific, readers will be confused and disinterested and the story will not get in front of many people. In this session, we'll discuss how to write headlines that people will click and share.
Webinar: How to Track and Identify Your Social CommunityEric Athas
Yes, social media is great for sending out tweets and posting stuff to Facebook. It can also be a valuable tool for staying on top of what’s going on in your local area or within your beat. There’s an ocean of story ideas, sources, news tips, photos, videos, firsthand breaking news accounts and local voices out there. A lot of it is untapped and below the “mainstream” radar.
Social media is a hot topic at organizations big and small – everyone wants to leverage new media sites to engage with their audience. Community-building tools like Twitter, Facebook, and blogs have been an effective way for brands to reach their audience, all for a small price tag. In this session you will learn about the different tools and tactics you can use to engage with your community and attract attention to your cause. You’ll also learn from case studies of how charities, non-profit organizations and fundraising events have seen success using Web 2.0 technologies.
Attendees Will Walk Away With:
• An understanding of the social media landscape and the most popular tools you can use to connect with your community
• Concrete examples of charities that have successfully leveraged new media tools
• An action plan for getting started with your own community-building initiatives

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Social Media: Week 2
• Distribution: Sharing your stories as a
station or an individual
• Reporting: Finding story ideas and sources
from your social media community
• Creation: Create stories that people want to
share
8. 8
Why? It Can Be a Valuable Tool
For…
• Finding sources for your stories.
• Finding story ideas early on.
• Tracking and connecting with your
community.
• Following breaking news.
10. 10
Twitter Search
• Twitter is a powerful search tool that
can be used to find out what people
are saying about pretty much anything.
• Use twitter.com/search just like you
would Google.com.
• Perfect for live and breaking news
situations.
13. 13
Twitter Lists
• Lists are a way to organize people on
Twitter by topics and categories.
• For example, if you covered fracking in
Pennsylvania, you could create a list
of officials, journalists and
newsmakers tied to fracking.
16. 16
What is Reddit?
• It’s a huge online community made up
of many smaller communities.
• People can ask questions, post
images and post links.
• It’s a good way of getting the pulse of
the Internet at any given moment.
24. 24
What is Reddit?
• There is a lot of everything on Reddit and most of
what you see will likely not be of journalistic value to
you. But there are gems that can lead to story ideas
and news tips.
• By monitoring and searching specific Reddit
communities, you can get in front of news and find out
what’s buzzing.
• You don’t need to check Reddit constantly, but looking
around specific communities once or twice throughout
the day (or when breaking news is happening) is
worthwhile.
