This document summarizes a professional development course on how to get academic articles published in journals indexed by Web of Science and Scopus. The course is aimed at non-native English speaking scholars and university administrators. 2. Who
The course is for scholars whose first language is not English aiming to publish articles in
academic English language journals. It is also useful for university managers responsible
for improving publication track records in Web of Science and Scopus.
The Course
CEU professors who have a long list of publications will share first-hand knowledge
and experience on getting your article published in the academic journal, from the
first step of approaching the editor till the final stage of publication. Academic writing
specialists will teach you the rules and tactics of academic writing, without which even
good research outcomes will be rejected for publication. The course will address the
following key issues:
• Selecting relevant journals, calibrating your chances
• Contacting and effectively communicating with editors
• Planning and structuring your article
• Considering the reader’s expectations
• Arguing effectively in relation to sources
• Using objective but persuasive language
• Getting and giving peer feedback
• Polishing and refining your manuscript for publication.
Note: to gain maximum benefit from this course you should have a research idea or a piece
of work in process that you can discuss and consult on.
Format
The course will include hands-on seminars, discussion workshops, practical advice
and individual writing sessions, with opportunities to discuss your work with writing
professionals. Each day will involve writing-focused and publication focused sessions,
as well as individual writing time. The number of participants is limited to 25.

Financial details
The fee of € 950 includes all documentation, 3 nights’ accommodation, lunches and
coffee breaks, group dinner, transfers, and a Budapest sightseeing trip. It excludes
travel and visa expenses.
A visa invitation letter will be issued as soon as payment has been received.

3. Our credentials
The Center for Academic Writing at Central European University has run many training
courses for scholars and teachers since 2002. As well as providing consultancy for
universities wishing to develop writing support or develop faculty teaching skills,
the Center has played an important role in training scholars in the area of writing
in Russia, Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands. Central European University is an
internationally recognized institution of post-graduate education in social sciences
and humanities (www.ceu.hu).
Course instructors
The course director is John Harbord, Director of the Center for Academic Writing. John
has 16 years’ experience of working in the disciplines of International Relations, Public
Policy, Political Science, Economics and Gender Studies. He has been an educational
consultant to the Charles University, Prague, the American University in Bulgaria, Tbilisi
State University, the Azerbaijani Diplomatic Academy and many other institutions. His
own research focuses largely on educational policy.
