The document discusses different types of social groups that students can join at school to make friends. It describes study groups for social or solitary students, popular groups that socialize and gossip, football players and their fans, wallflowers who quietly observe others, and unknown observers who are discreet. It suggests trying different groups to find where one fits best but also encourages students to simply be themselves.

Intro Communication Theory
March 3, 2017
Growing up, I’ve always asked myself “Who do you want to be?” I never struggled with finding that out, because my parents made it easy for me and my siblings. They may tell you their opinion on the subject, but they’ll always support us. Family is very important to me, we support each other, and it’s a very loving home. I think that’s why it’s so easy for me to try something new or be a little adventurous because I was taught not to be afraid of new things or the unknown. Which were one of the many things that helped build my character and make me who I am and get me to where I want to be. Communications is a broad field and there are so many ways of communication it is berserk. In this essay I’m going to take what we’ve learned from class and apply it to myself to truly get to know who I am.
Within many different micro cultures, they have values and symbols that are important to this specific group that they belong to. For example, Punk subcultures are defined by wearing darker clothes, maybe makeup, they have specific music subscribed to them, as well as having others around them that enjoy the same micro culture as them. Symbolic Interaction Theory centers on the relationship between symbols and interactions. It also views individuals as active, reflective participants in their social context. Some themes of the theory are the importance of meanings for human behavior, the importance of self-concept, and the relationship between the individual and society. By using the concepts within this theory, I can easily describe myself within this theory. I can say that I am a ‘vibes’ person if I feel like the interaction between myself and another person was off it would definitely alert me that maybe I shouldn’t really engage in conversation with them anymore. I’m all for meeting new people and small talk, I don’t mind truly getting to know a person but if the conversation is forced I never am one to force a conversation. I’ll just keep a mental note about our previous discussion and then judge people based from that. Self-concept is very important to me, after every conversation that I have, I reflect on it to see if it was negative or positive and based from what I’m told I take it as a good characteristic in myself or a bad one. For example, I work at Red Robins and I’m often told that I’m a great server and that I am a hard worker from coworkers, and managers to guests. People often compliment me on those qualities, so I try to uphold myself to the same standard anytime I go into work. That’s a part of my looking glass self, sometimes I feel like I may care what others think too much and it can impact me negatively as well because it’s always easy to remember the negative things said about you and people will often try to improve themselves especially if others view them in an unfavorable way. For instance, at work one of my tables were mad because the food was taking ...
How do you approach someone you don’t know? How do you get your point across to those you do in an effective way?
Effective communication is at the heart of every relationship, but some people stumble through small talk, avoid speaking with strangers, or even fail to have meaningful conversations with loved ones.
Social Media Manager Louise Jett focuses on communicating with strangers and friends in this presentation.

1. How to blend in:
Study Nerds
There are two different groups of study nerds. There are those who sit alone at their
spot and there are those who study in groups. If you want more friends you should
try the group.
And you don’t need to have straight As to make it in these kinds of study groups.
You only need an interest in school.
But first, you have to find them. Try the corridor or the library. When you find them,
don’t disturb the ones that look concentrated. But try those who are chatting while
studying, and take a seat. They will notice you.Don’t worry.
Even if it might feel like they just care about studying from the outside, they are
really nice and will ask you if you need help or even if you want to hang out
sometime. This group is for those who want many friends and like to be social while
studying and for those who like to talk to people that have different opinions.
If you want to study alone you won’t be without friends. At least one person will
notice and talk to you. This type of group is for those who don’t want or need a lot of
friends. Try to find a place where you can sit alone and concentrate. You won’t have
so many people to hang out with outside school, but you will use this time to study
harder!
Popular
To be popular isn’t just about ‘having the right clothes’ or ‘watching the right TV
series’,as many people think. You have to have strong opinions on all sort of things,
but still not too different from the others in this group. When they have their alone-
time they find time to do some studying to keep their grades up. If you like to talk,
this is a group for you. They hang out in the corridor or in the cafeteria and share a
lot of their freetime together. But if you don’t like to gossip try another group.
Football jocks
It’s obvious where the football jocks spend their freetime! Before you go to the
football field you have to know how to play football. If you don’t, you end up in the
group of people who we call the watchers. The football jocks are not the shy type. If
you show interest in the sport they will ask you if you want to join them after school
for some football. In this group, you will find a lot of friends that are nice and honest
and will stay friends for life, as long as you repay that kindness.
The Watchers
2. This isn’t really a group because they don’t hang out together like the other groups.
Some of them walk around by themselves and just look at all sorts of people and
learn to know them by watching. It’s a kind of one-sided relationship. We know
them as the Wallflowers. Some wallflowers hang out with other groups but stay
silent and observe the others. It may feel kind of creepy to be watched but they are
always there for you and are good listeners. They would never ever leak a big secret
and can stay good friends for years. For some people, this is a big mystery but the
reason they are like this is that they know your bad sides as well as your good sides
and know that all people have bad days and respect it!
Then there are the unknown watchers. They are the opposite of the wallflowers.
They like to talk and won’t say no to a bit of attention. It’s rare to find these watchers,
even if there a lot of them, because they are discreet and probably don’t know that
they are watchers themselves. But they still have this awesome faithfulness. Even if
they talk a lot, they do take the time to listen to you if you need to talk. And like the
wallflowers, they will stay friends for years.
There are a lot of groups you can join. But you can always ignore everything I have
just said and be yourself. Let’s see how that works out...
