This is presentation of Australian from our volunteers Amy, Jane, Clare and Issy. They worked with VPV Hanoi, Vietnam from Dec 2012 to Jan 2013. Thank you and enjoy!
7. Being a Student
• School is mandatory in Australia until you are 15 (grade 10)
• Most people complete their senior studies (grade 11 and 12)
• Depending on your marks, you may go to university (Uni) . More popular degrees
and Unis have a higher entrance mark.
• We do not have to pay to go to university…YET! We have a system where the
government takes the fee out of your tax once you are earning enough money.
• Most people go to Uni near their home and don‟t move out. If you are from the
country you usually live at college- on campus.
• University is very important, however Australian students usually spend less time
studying and more time doing other things…
8. Leisure
O Most young people have part-time jobs as well as university, so the weekend is time
for „chilling‟
O To relax, people might go to the beach, play sport, go shopping, go to the movies, go
out to a restaurant or just meet up with friends
O Australia has a big drinking culture, whether it‟s a beer at lunch or going „clubbing‟
until 5am, alcohol is very popular amongst young people, especially students who do
not have to work in the morning!
O Binge drinking is a problem, and so is drink driving. In Australia there are many road
rules and taxes on alcohol to try and prevent this.
O In general, it is a very expensive place to live, that‟s why most young people have jobs
BUT it’s worth it!
9. Multiculturalism
O Part of Australia‟s identity is that it is a multicultural country
O There are populations of many different nationalities in
Australia, for example if you were to come as a tourist we
wouldn‟t be able to tell unless you had a map out.
O There are over 300 000 people belonging to the Vietnamese
culture who live in Australia (a lot considering we only have 20
million people)
O We get all the great food! Vietnamese, Indian, Italian, Chinese,
Thai, Greek, Mexican and Turkish are very popular cuisines
10. City vsCountry
O The way people live in the capital cities is very different to how
people live in rural areas- like Vietnam
Melbourne, the capital of Victoria The „Outback‟
20. The Outback
O There are still some people who choose to live away from the
urban coastline. They may live on farms, cattle stations or work
in mines. Some may simply live there by choice.

52. Australia Day

O The Day the First Fleet landed
O Celebrates being Australian

55. ANZAC Day
One of our other national days is ANZAC day – this is a day to remember all of our
fallen soldiers and first began after the First World War.
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.”
56. New Years Eve!!
O New Years Eve is celebrated by
spending time with friends and
family. Many people go to
social gatherings to eat, drink
and ring in the New Year with
a lot of noise and fire works.
O One of the great traditions is
making a new years resolution.
This is a meaningful, but still
achievable change you can
make in your life or yourself.
This tradition recognizes that a
New Year is a new and fresh
start.
