How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

CAKE: Sharing Slices of Confidential Data on Blockchain
Presented at the CAiSE 2024 Forum, Intelligent Information Systems, June 6th, Limassol, Cyprus.
Synopsis: Cooperative information systems typically involve various entities in a collaborative process within a distributed environment. Blockchain technology offers a mechanism for automating such processes, even when only partial trust exists among participants. The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

1. Core updates from Google periodically change how its algorithms assess and rank websites and pages. This can impact rankings through shifts in user intent, site quality issues being caught up to, world events influencing queries, and overhauls to search like the E-A-T framework.

The processors combined with an awesome high-definition touchscreen display will always make you want to play more games, watch videos, and take photos all day. The iPhone is also a good phone for browsing the internet. The fast processor it promises will never fail you so you can smoothly surf the internet. The things iPhones can do are limitless. However, you also have the power to control it especially as a parent. The iPhone has control restrictions features so that you can limit what your kids can do on the iPhone. Whether they use browsers, sell BlackBerry phones online, install apps, or play games, iPhone’s restriction features will be a great help for all users. Here’s how to avail of the control restriction feature of the iPhone:
- 2. To enable restrictions, tap ‘Settings’ on your iPhone home screen page. Choose ‘General.’ Then, ‘Restrictions’ Tap ‘Enable Restrictions’ This process is very easy and it only needs a little of your time to accomplish this. To start the actual process: Once you finish the initial process, you will be prompted to make a four-number passcode in order to modify or alter restrictions in the future. Don’t let the child do it. Make an easy-to- remember password so you can access it with ease from time to time.
- 3. You will be given options on the possible things you can restrict. You can turn off all the access or select a few restrictions. Once turned off, the child can no longer see the app. Only by moving the slider back can the app be restored. Control the apps that your child can access. Here are some ideas on what to turn off for your child’s iPhone: In-App Purchases: If you don’t want your child to be splurging buying apps, then turn this off. You don’t want large bills coming home, right? Music and Podcasts: Since some of the music contains explicit content, then it is advisable to restrict this for small children. However, this only applies to iTunes songs. When you transfer a music file via Bluetooth or USB cable, the song will not be filtered. Once you see that the child is responsible enough, you can turn off the restriction by tapping ‘Disable Restrictions’ and reenter the password again. It’s as easy as selling old BlackBerrys.
