Long considered the dark art of persuasion, subliminal messages are often connected to conspiracy theories of politicians and advertisers using them to manipulate our minds and modify our behaviors.
But do subliminal messages really work? And if so, how?
The scientific exploration of the subliminal is slowly maturing since it first came to public knowledge in the 1950s. Here we attempt to walk you through 60 years of subliminal research and experiments, so that you can use this knowledge to empower yourselves.

As part of a team from Domus Academy's Master in Interaction Design and Master in Visual Brand Design, we created a new brand and interactive installation for Park Hyatt Milano.
Supporting the hotel's reputation and in order to improve the bar's attraction, we decided to create an interactive experience: an animated pictures/illustrations on the walls of "Divano" (The new brand name of the bar) That supports the hotel's reputation for award-winning service and the bar’s new brand as “Upscale Italian Home” with the values of comfort, friendliness, personal service, visibility, familiarity, transformability, selected quality and vintage styling.
We used an Arduino Uno, an Arduino TinkerKit Shield, Maxuino, Max/MSP and a homemade pressure sensor to power this installation.
Client: Park Hyatt Milano
Team Members/Interaction Design: Julie Blitzer, Hadar Geva, Goksu Karaguler
Team Members/Visual Brand Design: Ray Yen, Stephannie Yuan, Arber Racaj
Divano is an animated installation on the walls of “Divano”, formerly The Park Bar, at the Park Hyatt Milano. Supporting the hotel’s reputation for award-winning service and the bar’s new brand as “Upscale Italian Home”, the animations are personalized in real-time for bar clients and reflect what is happening in the bar using a variety of different inputs. The digital animations are shown in screens on the wall while the mechanical animation is a printed portrait that moves similar to a puppet powered by servo motors.
How to Creatively Use Shapes to Make Your Designs Stand OutVisme
The success of any visual storytelling or visual marketing strategy relies mainly on what the audience perceives. Today, I want to go back to basics and talk about how all the things we see can be associated with simple shapes and how the use of these shapes affects the outcome of our strategies.
Anything and everything, from elements in a photograph to a certain typography can be analyzed in terms of shape. All the bits and pieces inside our presentations, infographics and visual strategies are telling their own story. It is up to us to put these pieces together in a way that creatively and effectively tells our story.

Younger generations (mostly Millennials and Generation Z) use an emoji language in which they communicate using only, or mostly, emoji. Some emoji are pretty obvious in their meaning, like smiley faces, frowning faces and hearts. Other emoji have acquired double meanings, like the eggplant and peach emoji. This new emoji language has become so important that there are now emoji translators, most famous of all being Keith Broni. His work involves helping businesses use emoji properly to avoid the dreaded “emoji fail.”

12 Visual Hierarchy Principles Every Designer Needs to KnowVisme
What makes a great design? Even amateurs and who consider themselves complete non-designers can create effective compositions by prioritizing their content. What is the most important element of your design? What do you want audiences to notice second or third?
Visual hierarchy is a method of organizing design elements in order of importance. In other words, it’s a set of principles that influence the order in which we notice what we see.
These golden rules help us compose designs that are aesthetically pleasing and attract the right attention.
Utilizing certain hierarchy principles can help even non-designers create successful visual presentations that are both efficient and effective. While the precise number of hierarchy principles varies greatly depending on the source, we’ve divided them into the following 12 concepts, summarized in this Slideshare.

Give Better Presentations Using Your Body LanguageVisme
Almost 50 years ago, a Scottish academic named David Abercrombie1 told the world that while we speak with our vocal organs, we converse with our entire bodies.
The study of what we now refer to as paralanguage soon made its way out of peer-reviewed journals and into the mainstream world of motivational speakers and self-help coaches.
What is paralanguage? And is it true that our bodies give away our secrets even though we have thoroughly researched and prepared our presentations?
Linguistic scholars in the last half century have concluded that communication goes far beyond the words we speak and into the realm of inferred messages and vocal qualifiers.
In this post, we go over the definition of paralanguage, according to scholars, and look at how you can apply this knowledge to deliver more effective and convincing presentations.

The most successful and memorable presentations have one thing in common.
They all have a story to tell.
No matter how many facts or charts need to be presented, incorporating stories into a presentation will keep your audience focused and intrigued. Using stories to support data is a well-known technique in all aspects of public speaking, from motivational talks to in-company sales pitches.
In this guide, we will look at 7 ways to structure your presentations using storytelling techniques to keep your audience engaged until the very end. Look closely at each one to see which fits your presentation’s purpose best.

What Is Paralanguage? And How Can You Use It to Give Better Presentations?Visme
We speak paralanguage when we gasp, sigh, clear our throats, change our tone, whisper or shout, emphasize certain words, wave our hands, frown or smile, laugh or cry, string vocal identifiers like un-huh and ah-hah between our words, or speak faster or slower.
Mehrabian suggested that when people speak to us, we absorb a mere seven percent of what they are saying through the words they use.
We derive 55 percent of the meaning from their body gestures and posture and physical clues, and 38 percent from the tone and inflections of the words they present.
We cannot trust our bodies to speak as one with our words. They will betray us, with breathless gasps, with hurried words that depict our nervousness, with incredulous expressions even while we nod agreement.
In our everyday communications, most of us use paralanguage as a kind of shortcut to delivering certain messages. We use our arms and hands to say good-bye, we encourage people to come closer by beckoning with our finger, we hold our hands up, palms forward, to tell people to back off, and we shrug to indicate we don’t know the answer.
In speeches, by altering our tone and using gestures, we can highlight what we are saying and emphasize what we want our audiences to remember.
The one thing that paralanguage does not do effectively is cross cultural barriers. Gestures that may mean one thing in Western cultures, for example, may mean something completely different in the Far East or Middle Eastern cultures.
If you make presentations, you need to be aware of the impact of your paralanguage. It’s a good idea to practice your remarks in front of a mirror, discerning your natural gestures and facial expressions and determining if they are augmenting your message, or detracting from it.

The Wine Ordering Script
By Mike Peterson, The Vintopia
Follow these five steps every time you order wine.
Step 1) Survey the Table
Have a brief discussion with your dinner companions to better understand these two items:
Whether they want individual glasses vs. bottles
Their likes and dislikes (e.g., red vs. white, ill-favored varietals, etc.)
Step 2) Set Your Price Limit
Determine what your price max is and stick to it!
Don’t let the median price of the wine list coax you into straying from what you feel comfortable paying.
Step 3) Utilize the Server / Sommelier
This can be quite intimidating in a restaurant setting, so I’ve boiled the complexities down to the essential points.
Here’s what you need to convey:
Red or White
Fruit-forward or Earthy
The “body” of the wine. There are three options here: light-bodied (e.g., skim milk) , medium-bodied (e.g., whole milk), and full-bodied (e.g., heavy cream).
Price point. All you need to do is open the wine list, point directly to a price that you’re comfortable with and say, “I‘m considering a bottle like this.” which translates to... “This is precisely how much I’d like to pay, but I don’t want to say it aloud.”
Step 4) Sample the Wine
You will be presented with the bottle to confirm that it is in fact the one you ordered.
The server will then pull the cork and pour a tiny taste of the wine into your glass so you may determine whether it’s corked or defected in any way.
Give the glass a few swirls, a deep sniff and a taste. If it tastes off, let the waiter know and you will be provided a new bottle.
Step 5) Enjoy!
Once you’ve confirmed that the wine is sound, it’s time to sit back and revel in the fruits of your labor!
Don't let the servers rush you. Enjoy the wine at your own pace.

How to Work Hard Without Burning Out by Darius Foroux
It’s much better to know yourself, know your job, and understand one thing: Hard work is great, but not at all cost.
1. Love What You Do
- Work is a lot easier when you enjoy it.
- If you hate your job, that’s your decision. Marcus Aurelius put it best: “You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
2. Don’t Overestimate Yourself
- You’re not superman or superwoman who always has to say: Yes, yes, YES to everything. Sometimes it’s okay to say: No, no, NO.
3. Ask For Help
- Reach out to friends, managers, family, or any person you know. People will understand. And if they don’t, they are not your friends.
4. Don’t Feel Guilty
- People can take care of themselves. And what kind of leader or friend are you if you are burnout?
5. What’s The Point?
- Sometimes we do things that doesn’t make any sense at all. So ask yourself that question. No good answer? Don’t do it.
6. You Can’t Have It All
- If you want to do things well, with all your attention, you have to make some sacrifices.
7. Exercise Every Day
- Scientific research shows that daily exercise reduces stress, anxiety, and improves your focus. Only 30 minutes a day is enough to get results.
8. Chill
- Life is not easy, you know. So don’t make it even harder by being such a serious person.
20 Habits of Highly Unsuccessful and Ineffective LeadersVisme
It's great to model ourselves on the best, but knowing what habits to avoid can also be beneficial
1. Believe They have All The Answers
Believe that they have been put in charge because they're smarter and better than everyone else.
2. React, Don't Respond
Driven by their emotions, they react quickly to situations without worrying about facts or the repercussions of their actions.
3. Take Big Risks
They think that Smart Risk taking is for wimps.
4. Believe That Talking About It and Doing It Are The Same Thing
Who said action speaks louder than word?
5. Focus On Blame Not Solutions
It's better to know who's fault it was so that we can fire them and make sure this doesn't happen again.
6. Believe Their Own PR
Confidence builds trust, arrogance destroys it.
7. Don't Waste Valuable Time on Planning And Preparation
It's action we need not thinking and planning!
8. Hire People Beneath Them
They believe smart people are a threat!
9. Focus Instant success
If at first, you don't succeed then try something else!
10. Focus On The Big Picture, Not The Details
If you avoid the detail, then you avoid the devil in the detail.
11. Focus on Weaknesses Not Strengths
As leaders we cannot have or show any weaknesses, so we need to work on eliminating them, or failing that hiding them.
12. Confuse Stubbornness With Determination
13. Don't Play Well With Others
14. Think Praise is For Wimps
We got to be mean to keep them keen, and praising people too often makes a team soft.
15. Take Don't Give
The more we take, the more we have, that's how winners are made.
16. Quick to Criticize
If you want people to improve, you need to point out their mistakes quickly, clearly and loudly.
17. Easily Distracted
Look a squirrel!
18. Make Excuses
It was the previous manager's fault!
19. Love To Micro Manage
20. Practice Inconsistently
Predictability is boring.
