India has one of the lowest healthcare expenditures in the world, with high out-of-pocket costs for patients. Most Indians (86% rural, 82% urban) lack coverage for health expenses. Over 230 million Indians spend over 10% of their income on medical costs, and 1.4% are pushed into poverty each year due to these expenses. While India's gross savings rate was 30% in 2017, many adults delay or avoid care due to costs. To overcome the lack of medical financial planning, solutions need to focus on understanding spending behaviors, leveraging technology, changing mindsets, and providing affordable healthcare options like systematic investment plans.
