2. Company Overview:
● TMTL - TAFE Motors and Tractors Limited, a
wholly owned subsidiary of Tractors and
Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE)
● TMTL consists of three manufacturing
divisions, the Tractors Division, the Engines
Division and the Transmissions Division.
● Based at Alwar, Rajasthan, the unit
manufactures diesel engines in the 5 to 125
kVA range. 2
4. How does the diesel generator set work?
● The primary function of a diesel power
generator is to convert mechanical energy
created by the combustion of diesel into
electrical energy.
● A silent diesel generator set consists of three
main components: diesel engine, AC alternator
and control panel.
● Engine: The engine is the primary component
of a diesel generator set, this is because it is
the source of mechanical energy which is later
converted into electrical energy.

5. How does the diesel generator set work?
● The power output of the generators is directly
proportional to the size of the engine.
● Alternator: The alternator converts the electrical
output from the mechanical input supplied by the
engine.
● The alternator consists of a rotor, which is the
moving part of the alternator.
● The rotor produces a magnetic field which eventually
produces the alternating current.
● Control panel: The control panels consist of the
start and stop button. 5
6. How does the diesel generator set work?
● It also indicates the reading of various
parameters like voltage, current and frequency.
● The switches on the control panel make the
generator easy to operate.
● Inside the generator set, the air is drawn into a
cylinder and compressed.
● The compressed air is heated to a temperature of
700 – 900°C.
● Simultaneously, diesel is injected in the cylinder
which combusts due to the high temperature of the
cylinder. 6
7. How does the diesel generator set work?
● The heat energy is converted into mechanical
energy through a piston in the cylindrical passage,
this piston is further connected to a crankshaft.
● An alternator is coupled with the diesel engine and
the mechanical energy from the cylinder is
transmitted to an alternator and converted into
electrical energy.
