Scientists led by Daniela Sammler conducted an experiment using MRI scans to observe how the brain processes music and lyrics in songs. The scans showed that the superior temporal sulcus first processes the music and lyrics together, but then separates them. The front part of the STS only processed the lyrics, while the middle part processed music and lyrics as a single signal. Some researchers are uncertain if the brain truly processes music and lyrics simultaneously or separately integrates them.
