Few people would argue that playing is inextricably linked to childhood. inextricably linked to childhood. Despite
the recognition that being a child and
engaging in play go hand in hand, there
are movements within some educational
structures to separate—and sometimes
eliminate—play time (e.g. recess) in favor
of more rigid academic curricula that
include standardized tests.

3.  Montessori schools, however, continue to value
play time, and actively engage children in the
learning process. Montessori is self-directed
learning; children are encouraged to work at their
own pace and teachers introduce new challenges
when the child is ready. Learning becomes fun—
therefore eliminating the difference between work
and play. “Playing” not only develops children’s
physical aptitude, fine motor skills, language skills,
imagination, cooperation, socialization, and more,
but it does so at a time and pace that suits each
child's unique circumstances.

4.  Of course, not all play is created equally, and we foster
healthful and constructive play by equipping our
classrooms with stimulating and educational
equipment and employing highly trained teachers
prepared to stimulate and bolster students’ various
forms of play.
