money to a homeless person. The man sacrificed himself for
others just like Jesus did for us.This man is helping the poor
just like Jesus did for us.
Examples of Love in Today's world
This picture shows love because you are helping someone
other than yourself.
3. How did Jesus show love to people?
Jesus showed love to us through the story of The washing of Feet.
After some time Jesus got up from the table and went to a different part of the room. He took off his
everyday clothes, and put a large towel around him, making himself look like a servant. After that, he
poured water into a large bowl and began to wash the disciples' feet. Then dried them with the towel
that was wrapped around Him.
First of all, Jesus is like a King - but even greater than a king, He's the King of King's! By washing the
disciples feet He was doing something that only a servant would do. This would be like if someone
famous came to your house and started to clean your room, even getting down on their hands and
knees to clean under your bed! It probably would never happen.
When it was Peter's turn to get his feet clean he said to Jesus, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus replied, "You don't understand what I am doing, but you will later."
4. How did Jesus show love to people?
"No," said Peter, "you will never wash my feet." He said this because he didn't feel right having
Jesus wash his feet. He knew Jesus was very special.
Jesus replied back to him, "If I don't wash your feet, you cannot be with me."
"Then, Lord," Peter replied, "don't just wash my feet but my hands and head too." Jesus then
explained that He only needed to wash his feet; and that would make his whole body clean.
When Jesus had finished washing all of the disciples feet, he put his everyday clothes back on
and returned to the table. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" Jesus asked them.
"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and that is who I am. And now that I have washed your feet,
you can also wash one another's feet."
This story is an example of how we can treat others today. You don't need to
wash someones feet you can just do nice things to people and be the servant of
Jesus by doing what he wants you to do.
5. Why should Christians show love
today?
Christians should show love because jesus told us to ‘love your neighbour as I have loved you’.This
teaching is telling us that when Jesus showed love by sacrificing his life for us,he wanted us to pass
this on to your neighbour (other people). Love others like jesus loved us.
We can show love today by being respectful to each other e.g saying thank you, please or even a smile
to someone happy could do.
There is also the for love in our own life and especially the whole world because we are fighting
ourselves when we should have been loving others like how Jesus showed love to us.
An example of why we need love in our lives relates to war, povety, racism and religous problems.Think
of all the problems that could have been solved if we all treat each other like how you would want to be
treated.
6. The story of The Good Samaritan
A Jewish man was going on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. On his way, he was
attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving
him half dead. The poor man was lying right on the road bleeding. A priest happened to
be going down the same road. When he saw the man, he thought, "It would be good to
help this poor fellow. But should I spend my valuable time on him? Besides, 20 people
are waiting for me in Jericho and I need to tell them about God. And this poor thing can
not listen to me anyway. He is too sick. O God, help him Yourself!" And the priest left. A
Levite, a priest's assistant, was going down the same road. Seeing the wounded man, he
stopped and said, "Hey, fellow, are you OK?" But a painful moan was the only reply to his
question. "He might have fallen into the hands of robbers," the Levite thought. "What
does the Bible tell us concerning this? Never forsake the needy, but help them. It means
that I should help him. But on the other hand what can I do here? I am not a doctor. I
teach people God's law, but I don't cure them. Let someone else help him." And he left.
7. What does this story mean?
The poor man would have died if it were not for a Samaritan who was travelling on that road. We
should say that the Jews did not like the Samaritans. They would never talk to the Samaritans, they
did not even let the Samaritans into their temple to worship God. But when this Samaritan saw the
wounded Jewish man, he did not want to remember the attitude of Jews towards Samaritans. He got
off his donkey; he put bandages on the man's wounds. And then he put the man on his own donkey,
took him to an inn and took care of him. And when the man was settled, the Samaritan gave some
money to the innkeeper and said, "I must hurry. Here, take this money and look after this man."
"OK", the innkeeper replied. "If it were not for you, Samaritan, this man would have died."
What do you think, who of those three characters was a neighbour to the man who was in need?
Of course, that one who helped him, the Samaritan. For only a true neighbour can help you when you
are in trouble.
That is exactly what Jesus teaches us to do, to love and help all people, treating every one of them as
our neighbour.
