In India, one can see a whole plethora of housing typology from the
palaces of erstwhile Maharajas to the modern apartment buildings in the
cities; from huts in the villages to individual bungalows in the cities.
With modernization, there is an increase in nuclear families with each
family living in a house of their own. Now days, even senior citizens are
opting to live alone. Working people are opting to live in same sex
accommodations. And the housing sector needs to cater to all these
different requirements of different individuals. And thus, there is a vast
variation in the housing typology.

25. MODERN HOUSING
HOUSING TYPOLOGY : APARTMENT BLOCKS
5/4/2017
25
In Vadodara, the apartment blocks comprise of multiple dwelling units on a
floor. They share a common lobby which doubles up as a lift lobby. The
dwelling units house the people of various castes and occupations but the
social status of the residents is almost at par.
Individual apartment blocks don’t really have a community space. They have
a stilt parking and common terrace. On the other hand, apartment blocks in a
society have a common park and bigger societies have club houses and even
multiple parks.
27. MODERN HOUSING
HOUSING TYPOLOGY : DUPLEX / TENEMENTS
5/4/2017
27
Another housing typology prominent in the modern Vadodara is duplexes
and/or shared tenements. The planning of individual unit is almost same as
that of the dwelling units in an apartment block, except that the unit is
usually a double or triple storey unit.
Such units are hardly in isolation, and if they are, they have abundant space
available to accommodate a small garden / landscaped area. Otherwise, such
units are almost always found in a society. The society can be small or big.
Smaller societies will always have a small common park as a common
gathering space. Larger societies like in case of apartment block will have
park(s) and club houses and other amenities.
30. CONCLUSION

There is definitely a huge difference between the housing typologies of the
old city and modern Vadodara. Despite the differences, the need for a
common gathering space isn’t reduced. Though the form of the open spaces
has changed. From the open to sky courtyards in the old city, the open
spaces have now become the parks and club houses.
