them to do all thatdriving to and from Choteau. Pilgrim’s legs was strong again by Tom Booker’s
helping. Grace decided to tellTom Booker about the day of the accident. She told him the story of
that morning, Pilgrim was frightened but he seemed to understand. He turned to face the truck,
defended them. Tom Booker suddenly understood the meaning of the fear in Pilgrim’s eyes from
the magazine by a California man who also worked with horses. The horse was lostand alone.
Chapter 7 Mother and Daughter
Annie’s mother left her with the child’s grandparents since her father’s death. Her mother
and grandparents thought she was a useless troublemaker. So she was driven by a single purpose
– to show her mother and grandparents that they were wrong.
Annie felt like thatangry girl when she failing again. She had to be successful at
something. Now she thought about these things. Shethought about the hurt inside her thatmade
her act like that.
Annie asked Tom about the conversation was between him and Grace. Tom almost never
spoke to her about Grace; when he did, it was about safe things, facts.
Grace felt comfortable with Joe now. Joe could asked her to ride again. Shewasn’t going
to ride Pilgrim again so Joe led Gonzo, small calm horse for Grace to get on.
Scott shouted athis brother, Joe wasn’t letting Scott used the computer, so he told
everyone that he sawGrace was on Gonzo. Annie turned to Tom and asked him buteveryone

Annie talked with Grace in her bedroom, but Grace was getangry with her then Annie
walked away. Then she heard sound behind her. There was something about Grace’s voice. Annie

except.
On the drive back from the airport, Grace was so happyto see her parents together again.
The thought worried and excited her. She worried that she was not goodenough for Pilgrim.
Tom was driving Robertaround the ranch. He thought of Annie and all her questions. He
tried to push that thought out of his mind.
Thatsame afternoon Robertcalled the clinic in New York. Grace needed a newleg, he
told them. Then he tried to getplane tickets for all three of them. But there was a problem. There
were only two seats. Annie decided to stay here.

Annie sawTom coming outof the house. He threw a bag in the back of his car and then
walked up towards her. He said goodbyeand started the car and touched his hat to her. Then he
drove away.
Thatday Annie drove down to feed the dogs. Atthe moment a car drove in and stopped in
front of the ranch house. She saw him just before he sawher. ‘I couldn’t believe you were here’
she said.
Back atthe house, Annie prepared their last meal together. She pulled the rope trick form
her pocketand gave it to him. Thenhe very slowly showed her every move. Suddenly, she
understood. Annie asked Tom to keep the rope then Tom refused, and put it in his pocket.
Chapter 11 Love Hurts
Everyone was there , but Grace wanted to be alone. Shelooked at the waiting faces at the
side of the arena. Tom rode him slowly around the arena a few times. Grace felt good. She
danced with almost everyone. For the first time in her life she felt beautiful.

The next morning They needed food for the journey. Sheran to the top of the stairs
and called Grace’s name. No answer. Grace has probably taken for a ride. Grace rode Pilgrim fast.
