Genre Conventions
0A genre convention is a typical or
standard trope of plot, character, setting,
icon, theme, or effect in a genre story.
Horror Movie Convention:
Setting/Location
0 In horror movies the setting is significant in showing
the type of horror it is. Whether it be a haunted house,
dark woods, an abandoned location, its likely to be in
the location for a specific reason and will have
significance to the plot. Conventionally in horror
movies the setting will be dark, old, gloomy, futuristic,
dangerous and striking.
Character types
0 In horror movies you always have the main
protagonist, often the victim/hero of the movie, the
villain, who in horrors is often characterised by being
a serial killer, monster, clown, dolls or alien figure,
Police officers, children, ghosts, zombies, demons and
various other stereotypical characters are features of
horror movies.
Narrative Structure
0 Within horror films there are certain conventions that can be
applied, for example the use of narrative enigmas. These events
that have occurred are unexplained and therefore would work
best in the paranormal genre. These events leave the audience
feeling uneasy and confused as to what is happening, yet are also
intrigued into the reasoning and the answer behind it.
0 Binary oppositions are also a useful convention in the films
narrative, for example Good vs Evil which shows to the audience
the clear differences between the two characters. A sci-fi genre
would include an opposition with an extraterrestrial villain
seeking revenge against the pure hero.
0 Narrative theories can also be applied into the structure that will
appear in a horror movie and the conventions associated.
Props
0 The generic props that are used on horror movies
often include weapons such as knives, chainshaws,
guns, also things like candles to affect the lighting will
be used, old paintings and antiques will be used to
adjust the scenery and setting. Sometimes things like
rocking chairs, rocking horses will be used to make it
more intense.
Iconography
0 The visual style of horrors is significant in showing
the audience what genre and what type of movie it is.
Dark colours are always used in horror films, like black,
red, white, green. Significantly red and black connote
dnager and death. The lighting that is used is dark and
unnatural, often using shadows, the lighting is usually
low key and will heavily focus on the villain during their
scenes.
The costumes used are usually black and will show a
reflection of the character and what their role is in the
movie.
