2. Forms and Conventions
• The themes in a horror film are supposed to scare and entertain the audience. The types of
themes in a horror film could be: serial killers, ghost, revenge or haunting. Some horror films have
two different themes combined with each to make them more entertaining for the audience. In a
horror film there are different types of characters one is the protagonist which is the person that
has the best moral and the smartest character. Another character is the antagonist which is the
bad guy of the film who is normally shown as the bad guy at the end. In a horror film the camera
angles are quite important because it shows the audience that there is something not right about
what is going on. In horror movie certain colours are associated with certain type of horror movie
so red and black are normal horror movie colour where as if there was a horror movie about
something supernatural there might be a lot of white. The props in horror movies are normally
things that are abnormal to be in that place or that sort of person to have. The main setting for a
horror film is somewhere that is isolated and not many people know of and somewhere that
nobody knows what happened to it in the past. The characters are normally in a place like this
alone.
3. Themes
In horror films they normally use scary looking places and places that look like they haven’t been lived in
for a long time thus makes the audience thinks something has happened here to make no one want to go
here. Also the place is normally destroy and not a new building this make the audience think that it is
very old and that it has just been left alone for a long time. In horror movie they use different themes
that are matching to everything else in the film. Also the normal themes of a horror movie are things like
haunting, revenge, serial killers, gore, ghost and demon and exorcism.
4. Iconography
• Iconography in a horror film is use a lot because the characters costumes and props normally
mean something and it is all part of the film and the audience have to figure out what each thing
means. Also in some horror films iconography can be used so the audience get to know the
character more and to know what they are and why they are in the place they are. Iconography in
horror films are normally reveled at the end of the film to show what they are there for and what
they mean for different characters.
5. Colour use and lighting
• In horror films colour can be used in different ways but the normal colour’s that are in them are
red and black they use these colour’s because they show there is a darkness to what is going on
or there is something dangerous about to happen. In some horror movie if they are about ghost
or something around that then they might use white lighting to show that what they are showing
is taking over and is more powerful. The lighting in horror movies are normally quite dark and
gloomy and this suggest that no one should see what’s about to happen.
6. Use of font
• In horror movies they are a lot of different fonts that are used but the fonts that are used are
ones that look like they have been scratch into something or ones that drip down the screen. Also
the fonts that are used are something made hard to see which suggest to the audience that it
shouldn’t be seen and something bad is going to happen there. Also in the opening titles of
horror movie the font is normally quite big and is very bright compared to the background which
suggest there is a darkness about what is going on. Also in some horror movies the font is very
small and looks like it is trying to fit into the background which shows that what going on has
never been seen.
7. Use of location
• The location of a horror movie can show and mean a lot of things which makes the audience think
what is the meaning to the place where it is set and why it is set there. The location are normally
in places where people wouldn’t normally go which suggest that the location does not want to be
seen and no one has seen it for a long time. Also the location can also suggest how long the place
has just been left there for.
8. Sound
The sounds that are normally used in horror movies are normally very dark and loud and most of
the time the sound echo’s which shows the audience that the place is really empty and quite big
and has nothing in it, this means that the place has not been seen for a long time and no one has
lived in it for a while. Also the sounds can show what’s around the location and where the place is
set.
