Editor's Notes

  1. Clearly state the purpose—the goal of this project was to study and analyze tea bark to characterize the chemical composition
  2. We need to separate out the different components of the bark and compare to what is known in the literature. Experimental methods that we use to extract and analyze are compared to studies already done to identify components of the natural product.
  3. These people who live in Phillippines often use natural products---those of us in industrial countries usually buy pharmaceutical products over the counter but they have side effects. Allegra—expensive some people get sick from generic drubs, unbuffered aspirin or ibuprofen hurts your stomach but cheaper. What is in there? What are they drinking is it more gentle than the drugs we use?
  4. These trees have been used for medicinal studies in the literature---details of the medicinal compounds will be given in my paper----we have designed protocols from our samples based on these.
  5. Talk about the process low solubility making tea---dark not transparent
  6. This is like a tea bag and we are making tea----we boil 60 minutes let it steep for 18-24 hrs. we need to extract as much as possible moving forward to analyze
  7. We concentrated the sample from 50 mL to 5 mL (10X concentrated) We crystallize to to purify (How you make aspirin) this process is based on solubility of compounds and temperature
  8. We separated solid from liquid by vacuum filtration
  9. We separate into different components to isolate pure compounds of the natural mixture to identfy them
  10. This is a physical method we use to separate based on differences in boiling points
  11. Explain the process
  12. Identify the compounds a positive control is benzoic acid and benzamide because these are common deriviatives of ingredients in food (preservative) and medicine. Also tested the pH
  13. Compare melting points to to literature values (known and researched compounds). Benzoic acid others
  14. Important to society
  15. Why is this topic relavent or significant ---for the classroom new protocols for instruction but for us (society) we need to study more natural products in genreal because they are accessible for everyone and less side effects but the challenge is how compouns are presented in the mout (amylase) is very different than how they are absorbed in the gue (ph in stoach and enzymes) and how cells will process those molecules—VERY HARD TO IDENTIFY THE “MAGIC BULLET” COMPOUND that is helpsul
