The first part of the paper should focus on summarizing the design the authors used for their project. Purpose of Paper I: Study One Literature Review
1). Psychological Purpose
This paper serves several purposes, the first of which is helping you gain insight into research papers in psychology. As this may be your first time reading and writing papers in psychology, one goal of Paper I is to give you insight into what goes into such papers. This study one-lit review will help you a). better understand the psychology topic chosen for the course this semester (Facebook Consensus), b). learn about the various sections of an empirical research report by reading five peer-reviewed articles (that is, articles that have a Title Page, Abstract, Literature Review, Methods Section, Results Section, and References Page), and c). use information gathered from research articles in psychology to help support your hypotheses for your first study this semester (Facebook Consensus). Of course, you’ll be doing a study two literature review later in the semester, so think of this Paper I as the first part of your semester long paper. I recommend looking at the example Paper V, actually, to see what your final paper will look like. It might give you a better idea about how this current paper (as well as Papers II, III, and IV) all fit together into your final paper of the semester.
In this current paper (Paper I), you will read five research articles, summarize what the authors did and what they found, and use those summaries to support your Facebook Consensus study hypothesis. IMPORTANT: Yes you need five references, but keep in mind that you can spend a lot of time (a page or two!) summarizing one of them and a sentence or two summarizing others. Thus spend more time on the more relevant articles!
For this paper, start your paper broadly and then narrow your focus (think about the hourglass example provided in the lecture). My suggestion is to give a brief overview of your paper topic in your opening paragraph, hinting at the research variables you plan to look at for study one. Your next paragraphs will review prior research (those five references required for this paper). Make sure to draw connections between these papers, using smooth transitions between paragraphs. The summary+response essay requires you to use and engage with other written materials - that is, ideas and quotations from other writers - in an essay.

In your essay, you will (A) present the writer's ideas accurately and fairly, using your skills in summarizing, paraphrasing, and using quotations. And you will (B) present a thoughtful response, in which you take a stand on the major issue of the original.
You don't need additional information from the internet and you don't need to look for any more sources. If you do want to use another source, you need to clear it with your instructor.
Preliminary Steps
1. Read, re-read, annotate the article you chose.
2. Complete the "Responding to Writing" worksheet to help clarify and organize your thoughts on the issues.
3. Be able to summarize and paraphrase the material accurately.
A Possible Outline for Your Essay
Your essay might be organized something like this, in which each of the first-level bullets would be one or more ¶s:
• Open: Introduce the issues in a general way, possibly without mentioning the article/author yet.
• Introduce & briefly summarize the main article:
· Summarize the main, relevant ideas of the article and include important details. (Include the author's full name and title of the article.)
· Note that you will also refer to and summarize and quote from the article in the response section of the essay, so you don't need to provide a complete, detailed summary here.
• Respond:
· You will probably use some of the ideas you generated in the "Responding to Writing" worksheet.
· Discuss and offer some analysis of the issues raised in the article, and possibly comment on how the author has presented them, how convincing her/his evidence is, and so on.
· Present your own perspectives, thoughts, and perhaps feelings on the issues. You might describe your own life experiences or experiences of friends, as they relate to the issues in question.
· In this response section you need to be sure to explain your ideas clearly and support them (with logic, with illustrative examples, maybe with more quotes from the article).
· If you wish, you can bring in a couple of ideas/quotes from one or two of the additional articles to supplement or support your points.
· This section should be presented in logically organized, focused paragraphs.
• Close: Wrap up the essay in a meaningful and satisfying way.

- 1. Honors English 2 Writing Sample: Rising Above Essay Topic: Describe a situation where a person has risen above difficult beginnings. Use evidence from literature, movies, pop culture, and sports. Procedure: On a separate piece of paper, brainstorm for ideas and create some kind of web, outline, and/or map that will help you organize your ideas concerning the essay topic. From this organizational structure, compose a rough draft of your persuasive essay. When you have completed the rough draft, edit your paper for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization—please use the dictionaries and thesauri in the room! Use the checklist on the back of this page to check your rough draft. All of the writing for this assignment must be completed in class. You should have already done the procedure in class so please attach that to this assignment Your final draft will be written on the paper provided by your teacher. You will write on both sides of the paper, but you cannot go beyond the two sides! One thing to know about my class is when you go above and beyond you get points for that. You will type your paper. Evaluation: Your final draft will be scored using the AIMS Rubric. (I will provide you with a copy of this rubric to keep.) Be sure you have all of the following elements in your essay in order to score at least a “MEETS the standards” which would be an average score of 3.5 on the rubric. INTRODUCTION: (1ST paragraph) (6pts.) Attention Grabber (This is the first part of your essay—the part that “hooks” your reader or grabs her attention and makes her want to read more. It should probably be more than just one sentence.) 2-3 sentences that transition your reader from your attention grabber to the thesis statement (This would be some background information about the topic.) Thesis Statement (This should be the last sentence of your first paragraph. It needs to clearly identify the main idea/opinion of your essay and contain 3 points in parallel structure.) BODY: (2nd, 3rd, & 4th paragraphs)—each paragraph should contain the following: (15pts.) Topic Sentence that clearly identifies the main idea of the paragraph. (This needs to be the FIRST sentence of each body paragraph! Your three topic sentences need to correspond to the three points in your thesis statement!) At least three relevant examples that support this main idea of this paragraph. (facts, statistics, examples, anecdotes) Concluding Sentence (or clincher) that sums up the main idea of this paragraph. CONCLUSION: (5th paragraph)(3pts.) A reworded thesis statement (DO NOT use the exact same thesis statement! RE- WORD IT!) A summary of your main ideas (This is basically reworded topic sentences.)
- 2. A new insight (something you have not addressed in the body of your paper) WRITER'S CHECKLIST(11pts.) Follow the checklist as you are writing your paper Is my paper written for a specific audience and purpose? Does my paper have a strong controlling (central) idea? (THESIS STATEMENT!) Does my paper have relevant and specific details, examples, reasons, or evidence? Does my paper stay on topic? Is my paper well organized and complete? Does my paper have an effective beginning, middle, and end? Is my paper written in a logical order with a clear progression of ideas? Does my paper flow smoothly? Does my paper contain words that help make it interesting? Does my paper contain clear and varied sentences and effective paragraphing? Is my paper free of grammar/usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling errors? If you cannot answer yes to all of the above questions, then you need to do some more editing of your paper.
