Teruhiko Wakayama and Ryuzo Yanagimachi created the process of cloning mice in 1998 at the University of Hawaii. The process involves removing the nucleus of an egg cell and replacing it with the nucleus of a donor cell. The new cell is then cultured and the embryo is placed in a surrogate mother, where the process can be repeated to create multiple cloned mice. While the success rate is only 3%, this is higher than the second most successful cloning technique. The cloning of mice allows for further research into how egg cells reprogram nuclei and long term cloning results.
