The New York State Coalition of Hispanic Chambers of Commerce wrote to Congressman Boehner urging him not to delay or reverse debit card swipe fee reform. They represent over 20 chambers statewide. Swipe fees have skyrocketed in less than a decade, reaching over $48 billion and debit card fees alone have increased almost four-fold to over $16 billion annually. These fees are a significant operating cost for merchants and their customers are often unaware they are paying these high fees. Swipe fee reform is important for small businesses as fees are one of their largest expenses and have increased faster than other costs like healthcare. Reform would also benefit consumers through savings at stores and lower prices.
