What is Home Safety?
Home safety refers to the awareness and
education of risks and potential dangers in and
around a home which may cause bodily harm,
injury, or even death to those residing in and
around the physical structure of a home.
HOME SAFETY TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
• What are some essential safety tools and
equipment needed at home?
HOME INDUCTION
• Do you induct visitors in your home?
• Induct visitors on the following;
– The entry and exit points in your house
– The use of electrical and gas appliances and mechanical equipment.
– The use of safety tools and equipment such as the fire extinguishers,
etc
– The location of safety tools and equipment
– Proper storage of sharp objects and tools, etc
HOME SAFETY
• Do you do PRE-START before moving the vehicle?
• DO NOT leave your child in a vehicle alone!
SAFETY HAZARDS IN OUR HOMES
• Falls
Caused by wet floors, slippery stairs, and scattered toys all
create the potential for falls.
Risks can be minimized by;
Stabilize Staircases – Solid handrails, affixed flooring,etc
Secure Bathrooms
Clear floor
Install safety rails
SAFETY HAZARDS IN OUR HOMES
• Fires
Fire causes everything from mild smoke damage to
total devastation including lost of lives.
Risks can be minimized by;
Install fire alarms
Monitor candles
Unplug appliances
Purchase fire extinguisher
SAFETY HAZARDS IN OUR HOMES
• Choking
It is the fourth largest cause of accidental death. From a bit
of dinner going down the wrong way to a youngster
accidentally swallowing a small item.
Risks can be minimized by;
Inspect toys
Keep dangers out of reach
Monitor playtime
Cut up food

• Cuts
Caused by items with sharp edges used in our homes. It
include knife, forks, garden hoe, razor blades, etc
Risks can be minimized by;
Proper storage of kitchen supplies
Point knives and forks down
Put away yard tools
Close the trash
SAFETY HAZARDS IN OUR HOMES
• Poisoning
Many household items presents poisonous hazards such as
cleaning and home maintenance supplies.
Risks can be minimized by;
Proper storage medications
Keep paints and chemicals out of reach
Lock up detergents
Proper storage of personal products such as make-ups,
hair products, soaps, etc

• Burns
This seems to be the common household hazard and
caused by stoves, dishwashers, heaters, irons, etc.
Risks can be minimized by;
Latch out dishwasher, irons, heaters, etc after use
Usage of back burners
Use stove knob covers
Unplug electrical appliances after use
