“A truth, on any
plane, presented to
different men, is
accepted or rejected
by each according to
the good or evil of his
mind”- Kent
 It started in 429 B.C by a Greek historian Thucydides
later followed by Chinese in 900A.D.
 In 1790 Edward jenner,The Father of immunology.
Who was the pioneer of smallpox vaccine the world’s
first vaccine.
 The immunization was called vaccination because it
was derived from virus affecting cows (Latin.vacca-
cow)
 Later Louis Pasteur found out vaccine for rabies in
1880
 Vaccination is a method of giving antigen to stimulate the
immune response through active immunization.
 A vaccine is an immuno-biological substance designed to
produce specific protection against a given disease.
 A vaccine is “antigenic” but not “pathogenic”.
Types of vaccines
 Live vaccines
 Attenuated live vaccines
 Inactivated (killed vaccines)
 Toxoids
 Polysaccharide and polypeptide
(cellular fraction) vaccines
 Surface antigen (recombinant)
vaccines.

Levels of effectiveness
 Absolutely protective(100%): yellow fever
vaccine
 Almost absolutely protective (99%): Variola,
measles, mumps, rubella vaccines, and
diphtheria and tetanus toxoids.
 Highly protective (80-95%): polio, BCG,
Hepatitis B, and pertussis vaccines.
 Moderately protective (40-60%) TAB, cholera
vaccine, and influenza killed vaccine.
Hazards of vaccination….
 No immune response is entirely free from the risk
of adverse reactions or remote squeal. The
adverse reactions that may occur may be grouped
under the following heads:
1. Reactions inherent to inoculation
2. Reactions due to faulty techniques
3. Reactions due to hypersensitivity
4. Neurological involvement
5. Provocative reactions
6. Others
Reactions inherent to
inoculation:
 These may be local general reactions.
The local reactions may be pain, swelling,
redness, tenderness and development of a
small nodule or sterile abscess at the site of
injection.
 The general reactions may be fever,
malaise, headache and other constitutional
symptoms. Most killed bacterial vaccines
(e.g., typhoid) cause some local and
general reactions. Diphtheria and tetanus
toxoids and live polio vaccine cause little
reaction.
Reactions Due To Faulty Techniques:
 Faulty production of vaccine (e.g. inadequate inactivation
of
the microbe, inadequate detoxication),
 Too much vaccine given in one dose,
 Improper immunization site or route,
 Vaccine reconstituted with incorrect diluents,
 Use of improperly sterilized syringes and needles carry
the hazard of hepatitis B virus, and staphylo - and
streptococcal infection
 Vaccine or dliluent contaminated,
 Vaccine stored incorrectly,
 Administration of antisera (e.g., ATS) may occasionally
give rise to anaphylactic shock and serum sickness.
Many viral vaccines contain traces of various antibiotics
used in their preparation and some individuals may be
sensitive to the antibiotic which it contains. Anaphylactic
shock is a rare but dangerous complication of injection of
antiserum. There is bronchospasm, dyspnoea, pallor,
hypotension and collapse.
 The symptoms may appear within a few minutes of
injection or may be delayed up to 2 hours. Some viral
vaccines prepared from embryonated eggs (e.g.,
influenza) may bring about generalized anaphylactic
reactions. Serum sickness is characterized by symptoms
such as fever, rash, oedema and joint pains occurring 7 -
12 days of injection of antiserum.
 Neuritic manifestations may be seen after the
administration of serum or vaccine. The well-
known examples are the postvaccinial
encephalitis and encephalopathy following
administration of anti -rabies and smallpox
vaccines.
 GuillainBarre syndrome in association with the
swine influenza vaccine is another example.
 Occasionally following immunization there
may occur a disease totally unconnected with
the immunizing agent (e.g., provocative polio
after DPT or DT administration against
diphtheria).
 The mechanism seems to be that the individual
is harboring the infectious agent and the
administration of the vaccine shortens the
incubation period and produces the disease or
what may have been otherwise only a latent
infection is converted into a clinical attack.
Others:
 These may comprise damage to the fetus
(e.g., with rubella vaccination);
displacement in the age-distribution of a
disease (e.g., a potential problem in mass
vaccination against measles, rubella and
mumps).
 “Hence Homeopathy avoids everything in the
slightest degree enfeebling… hence it employs for
the cure only those medicines whose power for
altering and deranging dynamically the health it
knows accurately.”
(Preface of the sixth edition of the Organon: Dr. Hahnemann.)
Primum Nihil Nocere
 James Tyler Kent have investigated the pros and cons
of vaccinations and after perennial observations and
accurate weighting of circumstances came to the
conclusion, that the proofs that argue for vaccinations
are very doubtful. In fact vaccinations have contributed
enormously to damage individuals and the entire
mankind.
By Stuart Close…..
 Such a method is regarded as crude analogue or
imitation of homoeopathic mechanical
potentiation.
 This method is highly objectionable because it
involves many uncertainties .
 There are no means of accurately registering and
measuring all these activities.
By J.C.Burnett…..
 My own conception of the thing is just this : The vaccinated
person is poisoned by the vaccine virus; what is called the
“taking” is, in point of fact, the constitutional re-action
whereby the organism frees itself more or less from the
inserted virus. If the person do not “take”, AND THE VIRUS
HAS BEEN ABSORBED, the “taking” becomes a chronic
process – paresis, neuralgia, cephalalgiae, pimples, acne,
and c. The less a person “takes”, therefore (in such a
case), the MORE is he likely to suffer from chronic
vaccinosis, i.e. , from the genuine vaccination disease in its
chronic form, very frequently a neuralgia or paresis.
By Dr. Hahnemann
 Aphorism 50..the effect of morbific potencies
are fraught with danger and great suffering,
because they cannot be diminished and
controlled according to cicumstances,like doses
of medicines.
 In the footnotes..about the auxillary
diseases…….”and the contagious humor of
another contagious disease, carried along as a
secondary ingredient of vaccine matter.’’
Boenninghausen….
 Boenninghausen, who first realized that Jenner's
vaccinations were dangerous to the vital force and could
cause serious long term chronic diseases. He said."Whether
the same results may be obtained in every epidemic of
small-pox must be found out by later experience. If this
should be the case, vaccine matter, which in careless hands
is so dangerous, and which has doubtlessly caused an
enormous infection with the scrofula-poison, might find a
most valuable substitute." (Lesser Writings,
Boenninghausen, Concerning the Curative Effects of Thuja
in Small-pox, Lesser Writings, page 4)es.
 Vaccinosis is an iatrogenic disease caused by an
inoculation or immunization.
 J. Compton Burnett was the first to coin the term,
vaccinosis. In his writings he spoke of it as a subdivision
of sycosis. In actuality vaccinosis is neither psora nor
sycosis, yet it can be similar to both. Vaccinosis is a man-
made fifth miasm that has a separate classification
 Dr. Gallo, co-discoverer of the HIV virus stated, "The
use of live vaccines such as that used for smallpox
can activate a dormant infection such as HIV".
 This is his interesting observation that the person
that is most susceptible to contracting the disease
being vaccinated against is more likely to die (after
being vaccinated) when they do come in contact with
the natural disease
Facts in favour of vaccinosis
• First is that James Phipps, the eight-year-old boy
initially vaccinated by Jenner in 1796, was revaccinated
20 times, and died at the age of twenty with T.B.
• Second, Jenner’s own son, who was also vaccinated
more than once, died at the age of twenty-one. Both
succumbed to tuberculosis, a condition that research
has linked to the smallpox vaccination .
• smallpox and other communicable diseases were
declining before vaccination programs were enforced
attributed to the sanitation reforms and nutritional
teachings instituted around the mid-1800’s
• 90 percent of all smallpox cases occurred after the
individual was vaccinated. This lack of efficacy and increase
in disease incidence, while other communicable diseases
were declining, led to the refusal of smallpox vaccination by
some countries.
• In Australia, when two children died from their smallpox
shots, the government terminated compulsory vaccinations
• When England began to reject vaccination, then the
incidence of smallpox deaths decreased accordingly
• In spite of the evidence for lack of efficacy of this
vaccine it is still strongly promoted. This
continued use of a useless vaccine, however, is
not without its price
• Another additional harmful effect is that the
disease has changed form, and now affects
primarily a different age group. The peak
incidence of measles no longer occurs in children,
but in adolescents and young adults
• CDC anticipates a worsening of this situation and attributes it to the
growing number of mothers who were vaccinated during the last 30
years and therefore have no natural immunity to pass on to their
children.
• As with measles vaccine, there are several known or suspected
harmful effects from DPT vaccine. These included SIDS (Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome — research shows that children die at a rate
eight times greater than normal within three days after getting a
DPT shot), encephalitis (the pertussis vaccine is used in animal
experiments to help produce anaphylactic shock, and to cause an
acute auto immune encephalomyelitis),
• we have considered the question of vaccine
effectiveness with the surprising evidence that
vaccines do not actually protect populations
from disease in the way most people assume
–though they do seem to modify the pattern
in which the acute disease manifests.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
VACCINATION AND
HOMOEOPROPHYLAXIS
 Homoeopathy is a system of curing – similia similibus
curantur –whereas vaccination is not a curative measure
at all, but a preventive one. And since prevention is,
admittedly, better than cure, it must follow that it cannot
be the same; therefore, vaccination is not homoeopathy,
though I shall suggest that it might fitly be termed
Homoeoprophylaxis, inasmuch as vaccinia and variola
are similar pustular diseases, and the former being
preventive of the latter, it may be in obedience to the
principle – LIKE PREVENTS LIKE.
MIASMATIC APPROACH
 Burnett to declare vaccinosis a variant of the sycosis miasm.
As you will already know, sycosis is characterized by
affections of the skin, the lymphatics, the immune system,
susceptibility to fungal infections, susceptibility to cold, damp
weather, arthritis, affections of the blood, and many other
symptoms of this sort. Most importantly, it is typical of the
sycotic miasm and therefore of vaccinosis, to develop
growths of all types — cysts, polyps, warts, tumors and
cancers

Historical background of H.P
• Kent (1900, p. 229) stated ‘We must look to homoeopathy for our protection as
well as for our cure. A remedy will not have to be so similar to prevent disease as
to cure it, and these remedies in daily use will enable you to prevent a large
number of people from becoming sick.’
• Close (1920, p. 20) wrote that ‘Homoeopathy is opposed to the methods of
vaccine and serum therapy. It has been proven experimentally and clinically that
such methods are unnecessary, and that the results claimed by their advocates can
be attained more safely through the natural Homoeoprophylaxis and the channels
of the body, than by introducing it forcibly by means of the hypodermic needle or
in any other way.’
• Sankaran (1961, pp. 11-24) produced a very thorough literature review, sourcing
92 practitioners and hundreds of examples of HP. He explained, ‘Though the
effectiveness of the Homoeopathic prophylactic remedies for various conditions
has not been proved by controlled studies and statistical records, yet generations
of homoeopaths have used these remedies to prevent these conditions and they
claim to have done it successfully. So their effectiveness may be accepted on the
basis of this experience even if it is not proved.
• Shepherd (1967, p. 15) stated that ‘Inoculation with any
type of serum in any of these infectious diseases is harmful
and can easily and safely be replaced by a remedyor
remedies, proved according to our Law of Similars that
"likes cures like" on healthy individuals. Nosodes or disease
products of the actual disease are often most active
Preventatives.
• Dr Pierre Schmidt addressed in Geneva conference on HP:
‘The most noble role of medicine is unquestionably
prophylaxis. There homoeopathy asserts its superiority
over the existing methods. It can prevent disease without
endangering the organism, without incurring the
disappointments of the prevailing school of medicine.’
• . Allen says that he had used it for 25 years as a prophylactic and
has never known a second case of diphtheria to occur in a family
after it has been administered. He challenges the profession to test
it and publish the failures. ...Tyler writes that for nearly three years,
Diphtherinum in high potency has been used in the London
Homoeopathic Hospital to protect nurses and patients exposed to
the infection, with perfect success.’ ‘Morbillinum. As a prophylactic
given to those who are, or may be, exposed to infection.’ ‘Lathyrus
Sativa. Homoeopathic physicians are satisfied that they have a
really safe and better polio preventative in Lathyrus Sativa when
properly given’. Amongst the many examples of HP given by Sethi,
he then quotes the experience of Drs Smith, Grimmer, Bond, and
Foubister. Dr John H Clarke strongly recommended Pertussin in
whooping cough. In practice the results of Pertussin have been
verified by Dr Dorothy Shepherd.
Researches in favour of
homoeoprophylaxis……
 Leptospirosis epidemic control
A homeoprophylactic formulation was prepared
from dilutions of four circulating strains of
Leptospirosis. This formulation was administered
orally to 2.3 million people at high risk for epidemic
in a region affected by natural disease later a
subsequent decrease in incidence was seen.
Researches in favour of
homoeoprophylaxis……
 Prevention of Japanese encephalitis with
miasmatic prescriptionA study was conducted by the
Government of Andhra Pradesh from 1999 to 2004.
This project was named B.C.T, as prophylactic drugs,
Belladonna 200 on 1st ,2nd , and 3rd day one dose each,
Calcarea carb 200 on 10th day and Tuberculinum 10M
on 25thday were administered in phase manner to all
children between the age of 0 -15 in the month of
August every year for three consecutive years.
Researches in favour of
homoeoprophylaxis
 After its commencement in 1999 the
mortality and morbidity rates of J.E. fell
drastically. 343 cases were reported in
2000 with 72 deaths; In 2001 only 30
cases with 4 deaths; in 2002 only 18
cases but no deaths; In 2003 and 2004
no cases were recorded.
Researches in favour of
homoeoprophylaxis
 In-Vitro study on prevention of JE with
Belladonna
The in-vitro study was aimed at assessing the
prophylactic action of Belladonna in
Homoeopathic potencies on Chorioallantoic
Membrane (CAM) of chick embryo infected
with JE virus. A study published in 2010 in
the American Journal of Infectious
Diseases by researchers of Kolkata’s School
of Tropical Medicine and the Central Council
for Research in Homeopathy (CCRH) showed
that the homeopathic medicine Belladonna
prevented infection in chick embryos infected
with the Japanese Encephalitis virus
Researches in favour of
homoeoprophylaxis……
 Large-scale studies in Brazil prove the
effectiveness of Homoeopathic immunizations
against meningococcal disease
 In 1974, during an outbreak of Meningococcal
disease in Brazil, 18,640 children were protected
homeopathically against Meningococcal infection,
and 6,340 were not. The following results were
obtained:
 18,640 protected homeopathically – 4 cases of
Meningococcal infection.
 6,340 not protected – 32 cases of Meningococcal
infection
Researches in favour of
homoeoprophylaxis……
 In 1986, Australian homeopath Dr. Isaac
Golden began a formal research study of
homeopathic immunization. Over the course of
15 years, between 1988-2003, he gave
homeopathic immunization against childhood
diseases to 2342 children whose parents
participated in his survey. He tabulated the
survey responses, and found that the overall
effectiveness of homeopathic immunization is
90.4%
 From the current literature it is evident that
homoeoprophylaxis has the scientific data to
progress in the future in the field of prevention
of infectious diseases
Dynamic or microposic
homoeoprophylaxis
• The hahnemannian process is purely physical, objective
and mechanical.
• It does not involve any uncertain, unseen, unreliable nor
unmeasurable factors.
• Its resulting product is stable and is under homoeopathic
methods and principles and has proved it to be efficient .
• The process is practically illimitable.
Hahnemann on
homeoprophylaxis…..
 In 1799 - 3 years after the "birth" of homoeopathy in
Hahnemann's landmark article Essay on a New Principle I
resolved in this case of scarlet fever just in the act of
breaking out, not to act as usual in reference to
individual symptoms, but if possible (in accordance with
my new synthetical principle) to obtain a remedy whose
peculiar mode of action was calculated to produce in the
healthy body most of the morbid symptoms which I
observed combined in this disease.
Hahnemann on homeoprophylaxis…..
 Hahnemann published this pamphlet Cure and Prevention
of Scarlet Fever in 1801. At the time he
promoted Belladonna as a specific prophylactic remedy for
Scarlatina
 In an 1808 paper (Observations on the Scarlet
Fever "Only the honest Sydenham perceived this, for he
insists … that no epidemic disease should be taken for
any previous one and treated in the same way, since all
that break out at different times are different from each
other
APPROACH TO
HOMOEOPROPHYLAXIS
Three methods of homoeoprophylaxis
• First method is the use of the constitutional
remedy –
• a remedy chosen from those mental,
emotional and physical symptoms that are
unusual or peculiar to the individual patient.
This remedy strengthens the vital force in a
general manner by removing predispositions,
increasing vitality and raising general
immunity to stress and disease.
• The second method of homoeoprophylaxis is the use of the genus
epidemicus
• remedy that is especially useful in offering protection against acute
epidemic diseases.
• This remedy is chosen by analysing the symptom patterns of a
number of patients with the prevailing disease, and finding the
remedy that best fits the majority of cases
• Drosera for whooping cough or Eupatorium perfoliatum for
influenza.Hahnemann in this manner suggested Camphora as
the homoeoprophylactic simillimum for the approaching
epidemic of Asiatic Cholera. Boenninghausen had some
excellent success in using Thuja occidentalis in this manner in
the prophylactic treatment of smallpox.
• The third method of homoeoprophylaxis is the
use of the similar Nosode. In thismethod a
Nosode of the targeted disease is given as a
preventative to that disease.
• Influenzinum in flu prophylaxis or Morbillinum in
a measles epidemic. Closely related to this would
be the use of the sarcode Anas barbare hepatis et
cardus extractum (liver and heart of the Barbary
duck) for 'flu. Variolinum (the smallpox nosode)
for the prophylactic treatment of smallpox.
 "As a preventive of, or protection against small-pox, Variolinum
200th is far superior to crude vaccination and absolutely safe
from sequelae, especially septic and tubercular infection. The
efficacy of the potency is stumbling block to materialists. But it is
more difficult to comprehend than the infectious nature of variola,
measles and pertussis? Those who have not used it, like those
who have not experimentally tested the laws of similars, are not
competent witnesses. Put it to the test and publish the failure to
the world." Allen's Key Notes, H. C. Allen, Variolinum, page 300
BAD EFFECTS OF VACCINATION.
Thuja Occidentalis
 Thuja is indicated in 22
rubrics in different
chapters in the “after
vaccination”rubric in
‘Complete repertory’. It is
indicated for symptoms
after smallpox
vaccination,as
prophylactic and in
convulsion after
vaccination
Silicea
 Indicated in Scrofulous,
rachitic children, with
large head, open
fontanelles and sutures,
distended abdomen, slow
in walking. For ill effects of
vaccination. Symptoms of
imperfect assimilation and
consequent defective
nutrition.
Medicinal approach
Antim Tart
 Indicated for bad effects of
vaccination when Thuja fails
and Silicea is not
indicated. Great sleepiness
or irresistible inclination to
sleep with nearly all
complaints. It has thickly
coated tongue and desire for
apples. The child clings to
those around; wants to be
carried and doesn’t want to
be touched.
Malandrinum
 An effective protection
against small-pox and ill
effects of vaccination. Dry
scaly itching; rhagades of
hands and feet in cold
weather and from
washing.
Medicinal approach
Hypericum
 Indicated in injuries from
needles, pins, splinters,
from rat- bite. Prevents
lock-jaw. Injury to the parts
rich in sentient nerves,
which are very painful.
Nervous depression
following wounds or
surgical operations;
removes bad effects of
shock, of fright, of
mesmerism.
Crotalus Horridus
 Indicated in diseases
caused by a previous low
state of the system. For
dissecting wounds, insect
stings, bad effects of
vaccination. Malignant
diphtheria or scaletina;
edema or gangrene of
fauces or tonsils.
According to disease…
 Homeopathic remedies corresponding to a
disease in a vaccine: Based on symptom
presentation. I.e. Cicuta for ailments from tetanus
vaccine.
Stramonium for ailments from chickenpox
vaccine, Baptesia for ailments from the typhoid
vaccine, Gelsemium for ailments from the Flu
vaccine, etc.
 Remedies for incompletely expressed disease
states such as Zinc,Stramonium, or Helleborus,
etc for exanthamatic (eruptive) diseases where
the the eruptions have been suppressed to the
nervous system resulting in brain inflammation
Disease prophylactic
• Chicken Pox Antimonium tart., Pulsatilla, Rhus tox.
Cholera Arsenicum alb., Choleratoxinum , Cuprum ac., Veratrum alb.
Diphtheria Apis, Mercurius cyan., Diphtherinum
Hydrophobia/ Rabies Hydrophobinum, Lyssinum, Stramonium
Influenza & Colds Psorinum 200c given in the Fall before it becomes cold will strengthen the
system against cold and flu virus; Influenzinum et Baccilinum 200c (from Nelson’s Pharmacy,
London) every 3-4 weeks during flu season greatly reduces the incidence of colds and
influenza; Ocilloccocinum, 10 pellets twice a day given at the first sign of a cold or flu will often
abort the infection.
• Measles Aconitum nap., Arsenicum alb., Morbillinum, Pulsatilla, Varicellinium
Mumps Parotidinum, Pilocarpine, Trifolium rep.
Pertussis/ Whooping Cough Cuprum met., Drosera, Vaccinum, Pertussinum

Polio (Salk)
Rubella / German measles Pulsatilla, Rubella nosode
Small Pox Antimonium tart., Hydrastis, Kali cyan., Variolinum
Tetanus Ledum pal., Thuja, Tetanotoxinum; it is often
recommended that the allopathic immunization be given instead as
it produces vary few problems
Tonsillitis/ Quinsy- Barita carbonica 30c given when inflammation
threatens will abort the development of the inflammation

Conclusion…
• The adverse effects of injecting ‘live’ bacteria and
viruses are evident, but due to the huge government
support and lack of other alternatives, the
experimental work on vaccination continued. Later
vaccination attempts were with killed pathogens.
Nowadays vaccines are ‘attenuated’ or consist only of
‘antigenic proteins’. But even then, adverse reactions
to conventional vaccines are not rare and efficacy of
many vaccines is still questioned. Due to to lack of
systematic studies, homoeoprophylaxis was never
established as a scientific and effective method of
disease prevention
“He is, likewise, a preserver of health
if he knows the things that derange
health and cause and sustain
disease, and how to remove them
from persons in health.”

Homoeopathic prophylaxis VS Vaccination

  • 1. SIGNIFICANCE OF VACCINATION IN HOMOEOPATHY : By – Dr. Anit Acharya Department of Materia Medica Batch - 2013
  • 2. “A truth, on any plane, presented to different men, is accepted or rejected by each according to the good or evil of his mind”- Kent
  • 3.  It started in 429 B.C by a Greek historian Thucydides later followed by Chinese in 900A.D.  In 1790 Edward jenner,The Father of immunology. Who was the pioneer of smallpox vaccine the world’s first vaccine.  The immunization was called vaccination because it was derived from virus affecting cows (Latin.vacca- cow)  Later Louis Pasteur found out vaccine for rabies in 1880
  • 4.  Vaccination is a method of giving antigen to stimulate the immune response through active immunization.  A vaccine is an immuno-biological substance designed to produce specific protection against a given disease.  A vaccine is “antigenic” but not “pathogenic”.
  • 5. Types of vaccines  Live vaccines  Attenuated live vaccines  Inactivated (killed vaccines)  Toxoids  Polysaccharide and polypeptide (cellular fraction) vaccines  Surface antigen (recombinant) vaccines.
  • 6. Live vaccines Live Attenuated vaccines Killed Inactivated vaccines Toxoids Cellular fraction vaccines Recombinant vaccines •Small pox variola vaccine •BCG •Typhoid oral •Plague •Oral polio •Yellow fever •Measles •Mumps •Rubella •Intranasal Influenza •Typhus •Typhoid •Cholera •Pertussis •Plague •Rabies •Salk polio •Intra- muscular influenza •Japanese encephalitis •Diphtheria •Tetanus •Meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine •Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine •Hepatitis B polypeptide vaccine •Hepatitis B vaccine
  • 7. Routes of administration • Deep subcutaneous or intramuscular route (most vaccines) • Oral route (Sabine vaccine, oral BCG vaccine) • Intradermal route (BCG vaccine) • Intranasal route (live attenuated influenza vaccine)
  • 8. Levels of effectiveness  Absolutely protective(100%): yellow fever vaccine  Almost absolutely protective (99%): Variola, measles, mumps, rubella vaccines, and diphtheria and tetanus toxoids.  Highly protective (80-95%): polio, BCG, Hepatitis B, and pertussis vaccines.  Moderately protective (40-60%) TAB, cholera vaccine, and influenza killed vaccine.
  • 10.  No immune response is entirely free from the risk of adverse reactions or remote squeal. The adverse reactions that may occur may be grouped under the following heads: 1. Reactions inherent to inoculation 2. Reactions due to faulty techniques 3. Reactions due to hypersensitivity 4. Neurological involvement 5. Provocative reactions 6. Others
  • 11. Reactions inherent to inoculation:  These may be local general reactions. The local reactions may be pain, swelling, redness, tenderness and development of a small nodule or sterile abscess at the site of injection.  The general reactions may be fever, malaise, headache and other constitutional symptoms. Most killed bacterial vaccines (e.g., typhoid) cause some local and general reactions. Diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and live polio vaccine cause little reaction.
  • 12. Reactions Due To Faulty Techniques:  Faulty production of vaccine (e.g. inadequate inactivation of the microbe, inadequate detoxication),  Too much vaccine given in one dose,  Improper immunization site or route,  Vaccine reconstituted with incorrect diluents,  Use of improperly sterilized syringes and needles carry the hazard of hepatitis B virus, and staphylo - and streptococcal infection  Vaccine or dliluent contaminated,  Vaccine stored incorrectly,
  • 13.  Administration of antisera (e.g., ATS) may occasionally give rise to anaphylactic shock and serum sickness. Many viral vaccines contain traces of various antibiotics used in their preparation and some individuals may be sensitive to the antibiotic which it contains. Anaphylactic shock is a rare but dangerous complication of injection of antiserum. There is bronchospasm, dyspnoea, pallor, hypotension and collapse.  The symptoms may appear within a few minutes of injection or may be delayed up to 2 hours. Some viral vaccines prepared from embryonated eggs (e.g., influenza) may bring about generalized anaphylactic reactions. Serum sickness is characterized by symptoms such as fever, rash, oedema and joint pains occurring 7 - 12 days of injection of antiserum.
  • 14.  Neuritic manifestations may be seen after the administration of serum or vaccine. The well- known examples are the postvaccinial encephalitis and encephalopathy following administration of anti -rabies and smallpox vaccines.  GuillainBarre syndrome in association with the swine influenza vaccine is another example.
  • 15.  Occasionally following immunization there may occur a disease totally unconnected with the immunizing agent (e.g., provocative polio after DPT or DT administration against diphtheria).  The mechanism seems to be that the individual is harboring the infectious agent and the administration of the vaccine shortens the incubation period and produces the disease or what may have been otherwise only a latent infection is converted into a clinical attack.
  • 16. Others:  These may comprise damage to the fetus (e.g., with rubella vaccination); displacement in the age-distribution of a disease (e.g., a potential problem in mass vaccination against measles, rubella and mumps).

  • 18.  “Hence Homeopathy avoids everything in the slightest degree enfeebling… hence it employs for the cure only those medicines whose power for altering and deranging dynamically the health it knows accurately.” (Preface of the sixth edition of the Organon: Dr. Hahnemann.)

  • 20. Primum Nihil Nocere  James Tyler Kent have investigated the pros and cons of vaccinations and after perennial observations and accurate weighting of circumstances came to the conclusion, that the proofs that argue for vaccinations are very doubtful. In fact vaccinations have contributed enormously to damage individuals and the entire mankind.
  • 21. By Stuart Close…..  Such a method is regarded as crude analogue or imitation of homoeopathic mechanical potentiation.  This method is highly objectionable because it involves many uncertainties .  There are no means of accurately registering and measuring all these activities.
  • 22. By J.C.Burnett…..  My own conception of the thing is just this : The vaccinated person is poisoned by the vaccine virus; what is called the “taking” is, in point of fact, the constitutional re-action whereby the organism frees itself more or less from the inserted virus. If the person do not “take”, AND THE VIRUS HAS BEEN ABSORBED, the “taking” becomes a chronic process – paresis, neuralgia, cephalalgiae, pimples, acne, and c. The less a person “takes”, therefore (in such a case), the MORE is he likely to suffer from chronic vaccinosis, i.e. , from the genuine vaccination disease in its chronic form, very frequently a neuralgia or paresis.
  • 23. By Dr. Hahnemann  Aphorism 50..the effect of morbific potencies are fraught with danger and great suffering, because they cannot be diminished and controlled according to cicumstances, like doses of medicines.  In the footnotes..about the auxillary diseases…….”and the contagious humor of another contagious disease, carried along as a secondary ingredient of vaccine matter.’’
  • 24. Boenninghausen….  Boenninghausen, who first realized that Jenner's vaccinations were dangerous to the vital force and could cause serious long term chronic diseases. He said."Whether the same results may be obtained in every epidemic of small-pox must be found out by later experience. If this should be the case, vaccine matter, which in careless hands is so dangerous, and which has doubtlessly caused an enormous infection with the scrofula-poison, might find a most valuable substitute." (Lesser Writings, Boenninghausen, Concerning the Curative Effects of Thuja in Small-pox, Lesser Writings, page 4)es.
  • 25.  Vaccinosis is an iatrogenic disease caused by an inoculation or immunization.  J. Compton Burnett was the first to coin the term, vaccinosis. In his writings he spoke of it as a subdivision of sycosis. In actuality vaccinosis is neither psora nor sycosis, yet it can be similar to both. Vaccinosis is a man- made fifth miasm that has a separate classification
  • 26.  Dr. Gallo, co-discoverer of the HIV virus stated, "The use of live vaccines such as that used for smallpox can activate a dormant infection such as HIV".  This is his interesting observation that the person that is most susceptible to contracting the disease being vaccinated against is more likely to die (after being vaccinated) when they do come in contact with the natural disease
  • 27. Facts in favour of vaccinosis • First is that James Phipps, the eight-year-old boy initially vaccinated by Jenner in 1796, was revaccinated 20 times, and died at the age of twenty with T.B. • Second, Jenner’s own son, who was also vaccinated more than once, died at the age of twenty-one. Both succumbed to tuberculosis, a condition that research has linked to the smallpox vaccination . • smallpox and other communicable diseases were declining before vaccination programs were enforced attributed to the sanitation reforms and nutritional teachings instituted around the mid-1800’s
  • 28. • 90 percent of all smallpox cases occurred after the individual was vaccinated. This lack of efficacy and increase in disease incidence, while other communicable diseases were declining, led to the refusal of smallpox vaccination by some countries. • In Australia, when two children died from their smallpox shots, the government terminated compulsory vaccinations • When England began to reject vaccination, then the incidence of smallpox deaths decreased accordingly
  • 29. • In spite of the evidence for lack of efficacy of this vaccine it is still strongly promoted. This continued use of a useless vaccine, however, is not without its price • Another additional harmful effect is that the disease has changed form, and now affects primarily a different age group. The peak incidence of measles no longer occurs in children, but in adolescents and young adults
  • 30. • CDC anticipates a worsening of this situation and attributes it to the growing number of mothers who were vaccinated during the last 30 years and therefore have no natural immunity to pass on to their children. • As with measles vaccine, there are several known or suspected harmful effects from DPT vaccine. These included SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome — research shows that children die at a rate eight times greater than normal within three days after getting a DPT shot), encephalitis (the pertussis vaccine is used in animal experiments to help produce anaphylactic shock, and to cause an acute auto immune encephalomyelitis),
  • 31. • we have considered the question of vaccine effectiveness with the surprising evidence that vaccines do not actually protect populations from disease in the way most people assume –though they do seem to modify the pattern in which the acute disease manifests.
  • 33.  Homoeopathy is a system of curing – similia similibus curantur –whereas vaccination is not a curative measure at all, but a preventive one. And since prevention is, admittedly, better than cure, it must follow that it cannot be the same; therefore, vaccination is not homoeopathy, though I shall suggest that it might fitly be termed Homoeoprophylaxis, inasmuch as vaccinia and variola are similar pustular diseases, and the former being preventive of the latter, it may be in obedience to the principle – LIKE PREVENTS LIKE.

  • 35. MIASMATIC APPROACH  Burnett to declare vaccinosis a variant of the sycosis miasm. As you will already know, sycosis is characterized by affections of the skin, the lymphatics, the immune system, susceptibility to fungal infections, susceptibility to cold, damp weather, arthritis, affections of the blood, and many other symptoms of this sort. Most importantly, it is typical of the sycotic miasm and therefore of vaccinosis, to develop growths of all types — cysts, polyps, warts, tumors and cancers
  • 37. Historical background of H.P • Kent (1900, p. 229) stated ‘We must look to homoeopathy for our protection as well as for our cure. A remedy will not have to be so similar to prevent disease as to cure it, and these remedies in daily use will enable you to prevent a large number of people from becoming sick.’ • Close (1920, p. 20) wrote that ‘Homoeopathy is opposed to the methods of vaccine and serum therapy. It has been proven experimentally and clinically that such methods are unnecessary, and that the results claimed by their advocates can be attained more safely through the natural Homoeoprophylaxis and the channels of the body, than by introducing it forcibly by means of the hypodermic needle or in any other way.’ • Sankaran (1961, pp. 11-24) produced a very thorough literature review, sourcing 92 practitioners and hundreds of examples of HP. He explained, ‘Though the effectiveness of the Homoeopathic prophylactic remedies for various conditions has not been proved by controlled studies and statistical records, yet generations of homoeopaths have used these remedies to prevent these conditions and they claim to have done it successfully. So their effectiveness may be accepted on the basis of this experience even if it is not proved.
  • 38. • Shepherd (1967, p. 15) stated that ‘Inoculation with any type of serum in any of these infectious diseases is harmful and can easily and safely be replaced by a remedyor remedies, proved according to our Law of Similars that "likes cures like" on healthy individuals. Nosodes or disease products of the actual disease are often most active Preventatives. • Dr Pierre Schmidt addressed in Geneva conference on HP: ‘The most noble role of medicine is unquestionably prophylaxis. There homoeopathy asserts its superiority over the existing methods. It can prevent disease without endangering the organism, without incurring the disappointments of the prevailing school of medicine.’
  • 39. • . Allen says that he had used it for 25 years as a prophylactic and has never known a second case of diphtheria to occur in a family after it has been administered. He challenges the profession to test it and publish the failures. ...Tyler writes that for nearly three years, Diphtherinum in high potency has been used in the London Homoeopathic Hospital to protect nurses and patients exposed to the infection, with perfect success.’ ‘Morbillinum. As a prophylactic given to those who are, or may be, exposed to infection.’ ‘Lathyrus Sativa. Homoeopathic physicians are satisfied that they have a really safe and better polio preventative in Lathyrus Sativa when properly given’. Amongst the many examples of HP given by Sethi, he then quotes the experience of Drs Smith, Grimmer, Bond, and Foubister. Dr John H Clarke strongly recommended Pertussin in whooping cough. In practice the results of Pertussin have been verified by Dr Dorothy Shepherd.

This project was named B.C.T, as prophylactic drugs, Belladonna 200 on 1st ,2nd , and 3rd day one dose each, Calcarea carb 200 on 10th day and Tuberculinum 10M on 25thday were administered in phase manner to all children between the age of 0 -15 in the month of August every year for three consecutive years.
  • 42. Researches in favour of homoeoprophylaxis  After its commencement in 1999 the mortality and morbidity rates of J.E. fell drastically. 343 cases were reported in 2000 with 72 deaths; In 2001 only 30 cases with 4 deaths; in 2002 only 18 cases but no deaths; In 2003 and 2004 no cases were recorded.

A study published in 2010 in the American Journal of Infectious Diseases by researchers of Kolkata’s School of Tropical Medicine and the Central Council for Research in Homeopathy (CCRH) showed that the homeopathic medicine Belladonna prevented infection in chick embryos infected with the Japanese Encephalitis virus
  • 44. Researches in favour of homoeoprophylaxis……  Large-scale studies in Brazil prove the effectiveness of Homoeopathic immunizations against meningococcal disease  In 1974, during an outbreak of Meningococcal disease in Brazil, 18,640 children were protected homeopathically against Meningococcal infection, and 6,340 were not. The following results were obtained:  18,640 protected homeopathically – 4 cases of Meningococcal infection.  6,340 not protected – 32 cases of Meningococcal infection
  • 45. Researches in favour of homoeoprophylaxis……  In 1986, Australian homeopath Dr. Isaac Golden began a formal research study of homeopathic immunization. Over the course of 15 years, between 1988-2003, he gave homeopathic immunization against childhood diseases to 2342 children whose parents participated in his survey. He tabulated the survey responses, and found that the overall effectiveness of homeopathic immunization is 90.4%  From the current literature it is evident that homoeoprophylaxis has the scientific data to progress in the future in the field of prevention of infectious diseases
  • 46. Dynamic or microposic homoeoprophylaxis • The hahnemannian process is purely physical, objective and mechanical. • It does not involve any uncertain, unseen, unreliable nor unmeasurable factors. • Its resulting product is stable and is under homoeopathic methods and principles and has proved it to be efficient . • The process is practically illimitable.
  • 47. Hahnemann on homeoprophylaxis…..  In 1799 - 3 years after the "birth" of homoeopathy in Hahnemann's landmark article Essay on a New Principle I resolved in this case of scarlet fever just in the act of breaking out, not to act as usual in reference to individual symptoms, but if possible (in accordance with my new synthetical principle) to obtain a remedy whose peculiar mode of action was calculated to produce in the healthy body most of the morbid symptoms which I observed combined in this disease.
  • 48. Hahnemann on homeoprophylaxis…..  Hahnemann published this pamphlet Cure and Prevention of Scarlet Fever in 1801. At the time he promoted Belladonna as a specific prophylactic remedy for Scarlatina  In an 1808 paper (Observations on the Scarlet Fever "Only the honest Sydenham perceived this, for he insists … that no epidemic disease should be taken for any previous one and treated in the same way, since all that break out at different times are different from each other
  • 50. Three methods of homoeoprophylaxis • First method is the use of the constitutional remedy – • a remedy chosen from those mental, emotional and physical symptoms that are unusual or peculiar to the individual patient. This remedy strengthens the vital force in a general manner by removing predispositions, increasing vitality and raising general immunity to stress and disease.
  • 51. • The second method of homoeoprophylaxis is the use of the genus epidemicus • remedy that is especially useful in offering protection against acute epidemic diseases. • This remedy is chosen by analysing the symptom patterns of a number of patients with the prevailing disease, and finding the remedy that best fits the majority of cases • Drosera for whooping cough or Eupatorium perfoliatum for influenza.Hahnemann in this manner suggested Camphora as the homoeoprophylactic simillimum for the approaching epidemic of Asiatic Cholera. Boenninghausen had some excellent success in using Thuja occidentalis in this manner in the prophylactic treatment of smallpox.
  • 52. • The third method of homoeoprophylaxis is the use of the similar Nosode. In thismethod a Nosode of the targeted disease is given as a preventative to that disease. • Influenzinum in flu prophylaxis or Morbillinum in a measles epidemic. Closely related to this would be the use of the sarcode Anas barbare hepatis et cardus extractum (liver and heart of the Barbary duck) for 'flu. Variolinum (the smallpox nosode) for the prophylactic treatment of smallpox.
  • 53.  "As a preventive of, or protection against small-pox, Variolinum 200th is far superior to crude vaccination and absolutely safe from sequelae, especially septic and tubercular infection. The efficacy of the potency is stumbling block to materialists. But it is more difficult to comprehend than the infectious nature of variola, measles and pertussis? Those who have not used it, like those who have not experimentally tested the laws of similars, are not competent witnesses. Put it to the test and publish the failure to the world." Allen's Key Notes, H. C. Allen, Variolinum, page 300
  • 54. BAD EFFECTS OF VACCINATION. Thuja Occidentalis  Thuja is indicated in 22 rubrics in different chapters in the “after vaccination”rubric in ‘Complete repertory’. It is indicated for symptoms after smallpox vaccination,as prophylactic and in convulsion after vaccination Silicea  Indicated in Scrofulous, rachitic children, with large head, open fontanelles and sutures, distended abdomen, slow in walking. For ill effects of vaccination. Symptoms of imperfect assimilation and consequent defective nutrition.
  • 55. Medicinal approach Antim Tart  Indicated for bad effects of vaccination when Thuja fails and Silicea is not indicated. Great sleepiness or irresistible inclination to sleep with nearly all complaints. It has thickly coated tongue and desire for apples. The child clings to those around; wants to be carried and doesn’t want to be touched. Malandrinum  An effective protection against small-pox and ill effects of vaccination. Dry scaly itching; rhagades of hands and feet in cold weather and from washing.
  • 56. Medicinal approach Hypericum  Indicated in injuries from needles, pins, splinters, from rat- bite. Prevents lock-jaw. Injury to the parts rich in sentient nerves, which are very painful. Nervous depression following wounds or surgical operations; removes bad effects of shock, of fright, of mesmerism. Crotalus Horridus  Indicated in diseases caused by a previous low state of the system. For dissecting wounds, insect stings, bad effects of vaccination. Malignant diphtheria or scaletina; edema or gangrene of fauces or tonsils.

  • 65. Conclusion… • The adverse effects of injecting ‘live’ bacteria and viruses are evident, but due to the huge government support and lack of other alternatives, the experimental work on vaccination continued. Later vaccination attempts were with killed pathogens. Nowadays vaccines are ‘attenuated’ or consist only of ‘antigenic proteins’. But even then, adverse reactions to conventional vaccines are not rare and efficacy of many vaccines is still questioned. Due to to lack of systematic studies, homoeoprophylaxis was never established as a scientific and effective method of disease prevention
