Horror films have existed for over 100 years, dating back to the earliest silent films of the late 1800s. The first horror film was made in 1896 by French filmmaker Georges Melies titled "Le Manoir Du Diable." Another influential early film was the 1919 German expressionist film "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." Horror films aim to frighten and alarm audiences by invoking our deepest fears in terrifying and shocking ways, but also entertain. Some of the most watched horror movies of 2010 included remakes of 1970s classics like "Halloween" as well as original films like "The Crazies" and "The Human Centipede."
