Austria was severely punished after World War 1 through the peace settlements of 1919-1920. It lost significant territorial lands, was forbidden from uniting with Germany, had its military and navy restricted and dismantled, and was required to pay reparations. Austria went from being part of a large empire to a small, landlocked country.
