20. Pope Urban II
• The noble race of Franks must come to the aid their fellow Christians in the East.
The infidel Turks are advancing into the heart of Eastern Christendom;
Christians are being oppressed and attacked; churches and holy places are
being defiled. Jerusalem is groaning under the Saracen yoke. The Holy Sepulchre is
in Muslim hands and has been turned into a mosque. Pilgrims are harassed and
even prevented from access to the Holy Land.
• "The West must march to the defence of the East. All should go, rich and poor
alike. The Franks must stop their internal wars and squabbles. Let them go instead
against the infidel and fight a righteous war.
• "God himself will lead them, for they will be doing His work. There will be
absolution and remission of sins for all who die in the service of Christ. Here
they are poor and miserable sinners; there they will be rich and happy. Let none
hesitate; they must march next summer. God wills it!
• "Deus vult! (God wills it) became the battle cry of the Crusaders.

Advances in medicine,healthWere the muslims healthy?- The Islamic Golden Age is a historical period lasting from c. 750CE to c. 1257CE, during which scientists of the Islamic world are credited with a period of contribution scientific knowledge (including medicine)- As the muslim empire grew, the caliphs gathered a huge collection of Greek books on medicine (as they had made many discoveries)- Islamic scholars translated their voluminous writing from Greek into Arabic and then produced new medical knowledge based on those texts- Made the Greek medical tradition more accessible, understandable, and teachable - thus advancing their medical knowledge- Islamic scholars ordered and made the books containing medical knowledge more systematic by writing encyclopaedias and summaries- The importance of the health sciences to society was emphasized:- early muslim medical community strived to find ways to care for others, with God’s permission, the health of the human body- Medieval Islam developed some of the greatest medical thinkers in history-Developed hospitals (idea of keeping sick people quarantined and away from healthy people to stop the spread of diseases such as smallpox and measles) -expanded the practice of surgery (which was rarely practiced by physicians in the past due to low success rates), and the inclusion of women in medicine-Two very important medical thinkers and physicians of Islam were Al-Razi and IbnSina- Example: Al-Razi was the first to distinguish smallpox and measles through the fact that they had different aspects of the same disease- The first to recognize that fever is not an illness in itself, but a way for your body to fight off an illness- Warned people not to expect cures for all diseases and not to buy dangerous drugs from ‘fake doctors’ and their promise of miracles (at that time this was a great discovery)
- The Muslim religion itself taught that the sick should be looked after and that people should keep themselves clean E.g. Instructions from Muhammad pbuh‘Cleanliness is half of faith. Keep your houses clean. God does not like dirt. Brushing the teeth cleanses the mouth and pleases God. Every Muslim must have a bath once a week.’However, some Historians disagree about whether the Muslim religion encouraged new discoveries in medicine:E.g. The Muslim religion did not allow doctors to cut up human bodies, so they did not find out anything new about the human bodyThey did not allow much surgery to take place (although a painting showed a baby being born by ‘Caesarean section’ saving a child when the mother was dead or dying)
I found it very important to learn about Islam becauseIt's important we study Islamic Civilizations because they are very cultured and significant people. They were also very advanced in medication and science were the base of all of our medicine and science today. Without them a lot of the science and medicine we know today wouldn't have been discovered. We have benefited a lot from the Muslims such having a new system of Arabic numbers and also being able to have banks and education. Islam is a very civilized religion that is spread all over the world and it is the second most largest religion by population.It is also important to study Islamic Civilizations so we gain a better understanding of their perception, this reduces discrimination, as we become more tolerant towards the religion with more knowledge of it – e.g. reduces the perception that all muslims are terrorists.
