This document provides an overview of higher education in India as of 2012-2013. It includes statistics on the number and types of degree awarding institutions, student enrollment numbers by state, subject areas and gender, the growth in the number of universities and students since 1950, and expenditures on education as a percentage of public and GDP expenditures from 1951-2011. Some key figures are that there were 700 universities in India in 2012-2013, with over 20 million students enrolled and higher education receiving 41.3% of public expenditures on education in 2010-2011.
