Herodotus versus de Vaca Throughout the course of the world, there have been many
great civilizations that have risen and fallen from power. Many of these civilizations
are remembered not only through the texts or works that they themselves produced,
but through the writings of later historians. Herodotus was an example of a later
historian, because he wrote about a civilization of old, de Vaca was a historian of
the moment because he covered a civilization as he experienced it. The contrast in
the two styles is plainly evident for the most part in the two literary pieces.
Herodotus has a very distinct style compared to de Vaca and as de Vaca s works
came later it can be assumed that he was partially influenced by Herodotus. The

Herodotus was writing his passage mainly on the Egyptian people, but he did have
references to his native people the Greeks. De Vaca mainly covered the Avavares, a
tribe in modern day Texas who existed from 1527 1534 according to most
historians. The Avavares were short lived as they were often conquered by more
powerful tribes in their area, where the Egyptians were the ones who were often
doing the conquering in the Middle East. The two subjects themselves could not be
more different as the Egyptians owned slaves and the Avavares ended up as slaves.
Because of this discrepancy, there can be no mistaking who is who in the two

Refrigerators, gas and electric ovens, microwaves, vacuums, dishwashers....the list
goes on and on. All these things have made housework tremendously easier than it
would have been about 100 years ago.
This results with both positive and negative effects. It has given us easier ways to get
jobs done, leaving more time for other things, but the bad part of this is what is
chosen to do in this extra time. In many cases, this extra time is spent doing
leisurely things, which might make us more happy, but also has an effect on our
health. Lately we have become aware of the dangers of heart disease and the health
benefits of exercise....the exercise we would have gotten 100 years ago just from
doing our daily chores but now aren t getting enough of because we don t have to
work as hard to do those same chores.
This can be blamed on technology, but again, in fact it is our own fault because we
chose to use the technology and spend the extra time lazing around.Now,
something that really bothers me about technology is what is made out of it. I
often question why people spend so much time and money trying to come up with
so many useless things when we have global warming problems and starving

Last Monday, I got to experience a sensational performance by the University
Symphony, composed by Dr. Jonathan Pasternack, that enhanced my knowledge and
emotional state through the uniqueness of both the symphony and opera act.
Having only experienced a symphony once during the course of my life, I was
ecstatic to attend such a soothing and joyful concert. The concert was fairly short, it
last two hours, and consisted of 2 symphony songs and 1 opera act. The first two
were symphony, which were played in a very unpredictable manner. The melody
(violins) started off very slow and quickly increased their tempo. The orchestra

The opera in one act was hilarious and made the orchestra a lot more entertaining to
listen to. It made the entire audience feel at ease because the opera was an act
accompanied by a consistently steady tempo from the orchestra: there wasn t a two
part section, slow and steady beat, but consist texture. Overall, the performance
turned out a success. Both the symphony and opera act enhanced the audience with
the feeling of warmth and laughter. The symphony made me to realize how each

Right off the bat, we can tell that this poem is based on the free verse type of poetry,
as it doesn t have any particular rhyming scheme. It only occasionally contained half
rhymes, such as the words road and dead . Stafford was known for not having a rhyme
scheme in his poems, although occasionally in a few of his poems, he would like
to include it. Seeing as though there was no regular rhyme scheme, we are also
able to tell that the poem does in fact have a irregular meter, meaning there is little

poem, we can see the speaker trying to paint a picture of a gloomy night. He
demonstrates this by saying: traveling through the dark , that road is narrow; to
swerve might make more dead and finally, then pushed her over the edge into the
river. Stafford wanted to make us feel the same stress the speaker was in at the
time, by painting this picture, so we the readers can envision what is actually
happening. If we move on to imagery, we can see that when the speaker states that
the doe was large in the belly, inferring that there is a unborn fawn in the deer. This
was an example of fine imagery, to which the speaker wanted to demonstrate a vivid
idea
