This document discusses three Japanese concepts - Sumi e, Notan, and Tokonoma - that can be applied to minimalist web design. Sumi e is the art of ink painting that uses minimal color to capture essence. Notan balances light and dark to recognize subjects without color. Tokonoma creates a subtle focal point through seasonal decorations in an empty room, which can inform layout on a minimalist website. These Japanese concepts emphasize simplicity, balance, and focal points to strip designs down to their essential elements.
Programming and Minimalism: Lessons from Orwell and the ClashJonathan Dahl
Programming is writing. A programmer's job is to express abstract ideas in a specific language - just like the poet, the essayist, and the composer. But while writers and composers spend years improving their style, many programmers think style stops with "two-space indentation". This needs to change.
This presentation will discuss style in music, writing, and software. We'll look at such diverse sources as George Orwell, Mozart, and punk music, and will find that much of art revolves around complexity and minimalism - just like software. Finally, we'll look at specific patterns and tools for writing software that is not just effective and efficient, but stylistically beautiful.

Introductory presentation by Prof. Louis Sauer to Graduate Architecture students considering taking his course in Urban Housing Design, July 2011. Cultural values are essential to understanding architectural aesthetics. Prof. Sauer gives students a brief introduction to these ideas, using "poetry" as a metaphor for architectural aesthetics.
"MINIMALISM" is an art movement started in 1960's and early 70's post world war-2.
the art form derived from reductive aspects of "post modernism" and is subjected to reduce to necessary elements only.
shows the trend in design, architecture and art during the movement and work of the various artist related to the movement.
So trendy, so hot topic. Pity many misunderstand minimalist design basics, don't get the core of the subject. I tried to show the roots and influences, shed the light by decomposing minimalist design principles one by one

4. Sumi e
The Japanese word Sumi e translates to “ink picture”.
Born from a style of Chinese painting which in turn
inspired calligraphy, it was adopted by Zen Buddhist
and incorporated in their teachings. The absence of
color was thought to be more challenging and required
more discipline in order to capture the essence of
intended subject.

5. Notan
The concept of balancing light and dark together is
known as Notan. Being able to remove all the color from
the subject and still being able to recognize what it is.

6. Tokonoma
A Tokonoma is an area found in tatami room. It’s an
architectural structure which is usually recessed and
decorated with seasonal flowers, artwork or other
objects. It is this decorative area that is meant to be a
subtle focal point of the empty room.
