What is HIV/AIDS?
The abbreviation (HIV) stands for Human
Immunodeficiency Virus which is a life-threatening
disease that causes (AIDS) that is, Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome . AIDS damages your
immune system over a period of time and is the final
stage of an HIV infection, this is when your immune
system is now damaged and too weak to fight off
regular infections.

Have HIV/AIDS?
What are the Causes of AIDS?
The virus HIV causes the disease AIDS and is spread
through :
 Having unprotected sexual intercourse with an
infected person
 Blood transfusions
 Sharing needles
 Pregnancy or delivery or through breast-feeding
What are the Symptoms of HIV/AIDS?
The Primary Infection
These are the first types of
symptoms
• Fever
• Headache
• Muscle aches
• Rash
• Chills
• Sore throat
• Mouth or genital ulcers
• Swollen lymph glands,
mainly on the neck
• Joint pain
• Night sweats
• Diarrhea
Clinical Latent Infection
The second types of symptoms:
In some people, persistent swelling of lymph
nodes occurs during clinical latent HIV.
Otherwise, there are no specific signs and
symptoms. However, HIV remains in the
body and in infected white blood cells.
Early Symptomatic
HIV Infection
• Fever
• Fatigue
• Swollen lymph nodes —
often one of the first signs
of HIV infection
• Diarrhea
• Weight loss
• Cough
• Shortness of breath
Progression to AIDS
• Soaking night sweats
• Shaking chills or fever
higher than 100 F (38 C) for
several weeks
• Cough
• Shortness of breath
• Chronic diarrhea
• vomitting
• Persistent white spots or
unusual lesions on your
tongue or in your mouth
• Headaches
• Persistent, unexplained
fatigue
• Blurred and distorted vision
• Weight loss
• Skin rashes or bumps
The Effects of HIV/AIDS on Society
HIV/AIDS affects different areas of our society
such as:
• Family
• Health Sector
• Business Sector
• School/Education
The Preventative Methods of HIV/AIDS
• Get educated on the disease and how it is spread
• Get tested regularly if you are sexually active
• Keep one faithful partner
• Always use a condom
• If your infected and pregnant, visit your doctor
for antiretroviral treatment
• If you are infected and just gave birth avoid
breast-feeding
• Avoid sharing needles
