A herbarium is a collection of dried plants systematically arranged for study. To make a specimen, a plant is collected, pressed dry, and mounted on a sheet with notes. Mounting affixes the dried pressed plant and label to a heavy paper sheet for support during handling and storage. Common mounting techniques include gluing plants directly or with strips to the sheet, gluing plants onto an envelope strip, or attaching with pins. Herbaria document plant diversity and are used for identification, scientific study of habitats, chemicals, and evolution through preserved specimens and associated information.
