Henry Ossawa Tanner was an African American painter born in 1859 who produced religious works such as "The Resurrection of Lazarus" in 1896 as well as portraits including one of his mother in 1897. He was mentored by Thomas Eakins and painted in styles influenced by Rembrandt, Whistler, and Albert Ryder while focusing on biblical and religious subjects throughout his career from 1893 to his death in 1937.
