Editor's Notes

  • #2 Every year the Big Lottery Fund gives millions from the National Lottery to good causes. The money goes to community groups and to projects that improve health, education and the environment. In Wales, Big Lottery Fund gives out over £100,000 each day through a range of grant programmes, both small and large, that are open to the third sector. We are an important player in the field of grants and awards Because we are the biggest funder outside of Government. We give over £100,000 a day in Wales. Which equates to around £40+ million a year. We know that some applicants say the process of applying is difficult.... but the success rates are high: 46% of applications on People and Places gets awarded. Average grant size of around £250-300K for a 3 year project. 60% of Awards for All Grants (up to £5,000) get awarded every year. That equates to around 800 awards each year. What we say therefore counts.
  • #3 This workshop will explore good and bad examples of: Writing a project summary, Planning consultation + evidencing need Planning your project – looking at Budget and Monitoring and evaluation Showcasing your organisations experience. At the end there will be a chance to ask questions either about what you have heard today or about our programmes. These examples will give you the tools to write and plan a grant application confidently meeting funders’ expectations.
  • #4 Quite often the project summary is the section that is written last or is rushed. Done badly, the project summary tells the reader very little. Look at the project summary here. What are ‘Poverty Officer’s’ what do we mean by poverty? Who are ‘the people’, where will they be working and what are the activities? Without knowing these details it is difficult for the Funder to understand why the project is needed or what it is achieving. Without outlining the activities it is difficult to know whether the budget offers good value for money or whether the services are duplicating those already in the area?
  • #5 AIM:The aim is a brief statement of the overall purpose of your project. What your project is setting out to achieve KEY ELEMENTS: the project might also run a volunteer forum, or referrals service, email forum, training for peer advocacy etc ACTIVITIES/SERVICES: explain what you will actually do , the day to day activities, including monthly activities, think about the lifecycle of the beneficiary within the project. i.e. whether personal development plan will be written, objectives for beneficiaries through to how they will exit the project. HELPS DETERMINE THE BUDGET. HOURS : 52 weeks of the year? Summer months only? Weekends only? STAFF: Who will be employed, how many volunteers will you hope to attract? LINKS: how do you link with other agencies, how often do you meet, if through a forum or steering group- name it. If you receive referrals/pass referrals mention this. If your beneficiaries have already told you what they need you could include in the summary section a draft timetable of events/activities Draft timetable for the first 6 months
  • #7 What we like about this statement- they have consulted. What we don't like about this statement: How many were consulted? Are these representative of the local area i.e. Asked both males and females? Been to different parts of the neighbourhood. A range of ages? they asked a specific question without giving options? They might support
  • #8 Consultation methods- questionnaire, Survey Gizmo , meetings, focus groups, emails, letters, social media
  • #10 The Evidence doesn't summarise the consultation that has probably taken place? It leaves the reader to make the assumption that the project will tackle mental health, but will it do so in a meaningful way? What studies or research have shown the affect of the environment on peoples health and wellbeing? Have those that have been consulted with identified that they would like to have more environmental activities? Or is this a top down project? Evidence should connect with the need for the project not leave the reader assuming ‘How?’
  • #12 Rounding up figures shows a lack of budgetary planning. Funders are suspicious if the amount requested exactly matches the amount on offer.
  • #13 We cannot increase your grant after award so your budget MUST be correct. Incorrect budgets show poor planning. Value for money, you should compare the costs of your projects to those that are similar. If costs are high think about how these costs will be sustained once our grant runs out? E.g. We had an application for 11 full time posts- who else is going to fund a project of that size? If costs are high think about whether your trying to do too much? Walk before you can run!
  • #14 Q. How will you know that you have achieved what you have set out to? Think about the original impact of the project on beneficiaries, volunteers , professionals and the third sector. Q. How will you evidence that you have addressed that impact? I met with a project last week who described the needs of the area as – nothing for young people to do, low level skills, high unemployment. The project was to set up a week long festival in the area. However it was unlikely that a week long festival would have changed any of those needs? So proper evaluation evidences that you have achieved what you set out to do. Once you have compelling evaluation you can start to influence the sector in a powerful way. You can start to share what you have learnt and perhaps replicate in other areas. You could use your findings to show cost savings and help local authorities to take a preventative approach, or approach investment funders for payment by results. Evaluation is like a Porche (the car) it should not be kept in the garage, but shown off! But like a car, if you have no real plan for how you will show it off you may find your self on a lonely road with no one to notice. It is better that you plan your dissemination path, so that you have observers along the road.
  • #16 Often, when we ask what experience the organisation has we
