Elder Health Issues - Especially Targetedkananjames
India is experiencing a demographic shift as its elderly population grows rapidly. Currently, India has the second largest elderly population in the world which is expected to rise to 20% of the total population by 2050. The decline of the traditional joint family system and changing social values have increased issues of insecurity, loneliness, and lack of support for seniors. This has created an urgent need for solutions addressing the social, health, and financial security of older Indians. Most elderly Indians do not receive a pension and have to rely on family or personal savings, making them vulnerable as costs of living rise.

1) With increasing life expectancies and declining birth rates, the elderly population is growing rapidly in developed countries. By 2050, 37% of Europeans will be over 60 years old.
2) In India, the elderly population is also growing as the population ages. By 2050, India is expected to have approximately 20% of the worldwide population over 60 years old.
3) Assisted living facilities that incorporate IoT devices have the potential to effectively monitor residents and provide customized care without the stigma of abandonment. Data from wearables and smart home devices could help diagnose health issues earlier and reduce unnecessary medical tests.
This document provides an overview of HelpAge India, a leading charity in India focused on helping disadvantaged elders. It discusses HelpAge India's history and major programs, including its AdvantAge Card program, Mobile Medical Units, cataract surgeries, physiotherapy, and elder helplines. This document discusses various factors related to health and healthcare facilities in India. It explains that health involves not just the absence of disease but also having clean water, adequate food, mental well-being, and a pollution-free environment. It then discusses some key aspects of healthcare in India like the large number of medical colleges and doctors produced annually, the growth in hospitals over time, medical tourism, and India's role as a producer of medicines. It also notes some ongoing health issues like tuberculosis deaths and the lack of clean drinking water for all.
The document discusses long-term care and aging in place. It notes that the need for long-term care is increasing, which will require additional training for healthcare workers, family members, and patients. Family members can feel reassured knowing their loved one will gain confidence and maintain quality care during and after treatment. Long-term care helps those who cannot perform daily living activities independently and includes services like home care, adult day care programs, and nursing facilities. Community care programs established under the Older Americans Act also provide support.
The document discusses how aids and adaptations can help people with arthritis live more independently and reduce their need for expensive care services. Some key points:
- Over half of survey respondents with musculoskeletal conditions were unable to complete basic daily tasks independently, suggesting many would qualify for free aids and adaptations.
- However, many people are unaware of the help available from their local authorities or are paying for equipment themselves. Only 16% received aids from local authorities.
- Aids and adaptations can significantly improve people's quality of life and independence. 95% of users said they had a positive impact and 79% said they improved independence. For some, they make the difference between independence or relying on others.

Challenges Faced by Retired People and Old Parents.pptxSumanaDas85
In India, the aging population faces unique healthcare challenges that demand attention and action. Enhancing healthcare infrastructure for the elderly is crucial to ensure their well-being and quality of life.
A growing number of elderly with chronic diseases or disabilities require a family caregiver, or several, for physical, emotional, and financial support; for daily activities and medical.
Medical advances, new drugs, improved technology, and possible preventive strategies might be decreasing mortality and extending life. Since the 1970’s, medical care has resulted in a progressive shift from “care in the community to care by the community.”

Vaatsalya Healthcare aims to address India's healthcare problems by creating affordable and accessible primary and secondary care hospitals in rural and semi-urban areas. The document outlines some key healthcare issues in India such as over 45% of children being malnourished and only 42% being fully immunized. It then presents the concept of Vaatsalya, a network of for-profit hospitals between 50-70 beds in size focused on providing customer-oriented and ethical care in underserved communities. The goal is to scale this model by ensuring the right team, systems and funding are in place while maintaining financial viability and alignment with the social mission.
There are over 200,000 carers in South Australia who provide ongoing care and assistance to people with disabilities or chronic illnesses. The Carers Recognition Act was introduced to improve recognition of carers and ensure they have access to support services, as caring responsibilities are often overlooked.
This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

Combined Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Vessel List.Christina Parmionova
The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.

Help for the elderly available in India
An ageing population is one of the most spoken about phenomena in
the world. The old age homes in India have initiated many programs
and elder health care services that have contributed to better living-
conditions. These homes not only prioritize the health conditions but
living as a whole. Growing old also means a deficient body mobility and
lack of activities which takes a massive toll on the physical conditions of
the elderly. Hence, these homes are doing an astounding job in

because it lets the elders stay at the comfort of their own home due to
conditions such as deterioration of health and mobility at the same
time receive the best possible treatment and medication. Studies
suggest that 88% of the older citizens (above 80) suffer diseases such as
Asthma, Arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and so on.
There are many organisations that offer healthcare programs through
mobile healthcare units that has a social worker, a doctor and a
pharmacist. These units go to the residences of those elderly in need be
it in cities or into the interiors of slums or villages offering treatment to
the destitute elders at their domiciles.

mostly end up facing blindness due to lack of treatment. Studies
suggest that around 1.2 crore elders in India cannot afford treatment
for Cataract. There are senior care organisations which provide aid to
those who are suffering from Cataract by conducting Cataract surgeries

One of the most crucial needs of the elderly in India is a roof over their
heads. Elders who need home support are mostly either abandoned by
families, suffering from chronic illness, destitute or have survived a
natural disaster. The old age homes are doing a commendable job in
making life easier for such people. These homes not only provide the
elderly with a roof but other basic amenities such as adequate food,
medication, clothing and so on. In India, there are 728 old age homes
today out of which 95 homes are paid, 116 homes have both the
facilities of paid and unpaid stay, 101 homes are only for women and
278 homes are available for the sick. Kerala has a total of 124 old age
homes which is the highest than the rest of the states.
Physiotherapy services
Physiotherapy for older people is extremely important because when a
human body grows older, it endures many physical changes which
include reduced muscle strength, stiffer joints, poor coordination,
reduced bone density, increased body fat and what not. These are the
health conditions that contribute to a reduced mobility and lack of
balance that causes the elders to fall more often and break bones.
There are many organizations which offer physiotherapy services to the
elderly through stationary physiotherapy clinics, home visits and mobile
services.

Over the last few years, the old age homes in India have initiated many
programs that deal with elderly health care services. These programs
have helped in making the lives of the elderly much easier. The motive
of these organizations is to address the needs of the elders and
encourage them to live a healthier, dignified and an active life.
