➢ Took up post in a large failing Healthcare Centre, utilised a wide range of
management skills and competencies to introduce and consolidate sustainable
changes to services, performance and culture.
➢ Introduced realistic achievable delivery plans across all areas.
➢ Introduced robust systems, structures, audits, risk management, policy and procedure.
➢ Integrated teams, eliminated silo working to achieve excellent healthcare delivery
from reception to transfer or release.
➢ Redesigned two dysfunctional inpatient units.
➢ Played an active role in the prison executive senior management team, thus
achieving acceptance of healthcare as a key part of H.M.P. Birmingham’s core
business.
➢ Changed strategy and approach to drive down significant overuse and overspends on
escort, bed watch and constant watch budgets.
➢ Managed a £7.5 million pound budget.
➢ Supported staff, developed and maintained services through a protracted single
tender exercise by the Primary Care Trust. This saw staffing fall to 40% whole time
equivalent levels for a significant time. This required creative and robust daily
management to ensure safe staffing arrangements that could manage delivery and
risk.
➢ Successfully submitted bids to statutory and voluntary agencies to implement o End
of life nursing post and end of life facilities o Kings Fund – enhancing the healing
environment o Primary mental health team funding
o Day-­­care provision
➢ Achieved excellent H.M.C.I.P. report December 2009 – Birmingham recognised as
‘’well managed’’ during unannounced inspection.
➢ Ensured compliance with C.Q.C and all other relevant standards – prison specific and
broader NHS standards.
