Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium which infects the reproductive tract. In the US, there are over 800,000 new cases annually with young people aged 15-24 most at risk. While some experience no symptoms, others experience burning during urination and abnormal discharge. Untreated gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility. It is treatable with antibiotics but increasing antibiotic resistance is a concern. Prevention involves abstinence, condom use, and mutually monogamous relationships between tested partners.
