This study investigated the health and lifestyle of dentists in the United Arab Emirates. A survey of 733 dentists found that over 60% did not exercise regularly, with lack of time being the most common barrier reported. Around 14% of dentists smoked cigarettes weekly. The study also found that 16% of dentists reported having cardiovascular diseases or other systemic health issues. Overall, the study suggests that dentists in the UAE could benefit from continuing education on exercise, smoking cessation, and reducing stress to improve their health.
This document discusses the use of general anesthesia to facilitate dental treatment. It finds that 91.5% of house surgeons did not perform any treatment under sedation. Those who did use sedation obtained their training through postgraduate studies, with only 30.2% receiving undergraduate training. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons were found to provide most sedation services compared to other specialists. Guidelines for sedation are needed to standardize patient assessment, practitioner training, emergency management and more.
Sintomas musculoesqueleticos en dentistasFelipe Chacón
This study examined the relationship between work posture and musculoskeletal complaints in 60 male Israeli dentists. The key findings were:
1) The most common musculoskeletal symptoms reported in the last 12 months were in the lower back (55% of dentists) and neck (38%).
2) Dentists who worked in a sitting position for over 80% of the time reported more severe lower back pain than those who alternated between sitting and standing.
3) While age, workload, and hours worked were higher for dentists who alternated positions, alternating positions was still associated with less severe lower back pain. This suggests alternating positions may help reduce lower back pain for dentists.

Work–related Musculoskeletal Disorders Among Healthcare Workers in a General ...CSCJournals
Background. Musculoskeletal disorders is the most common disease among healthcare workers. Which affects not only the quality of life but also the income, the health, the economy. In Vietnam, there are some research about the MSDs among healthcare workers and the factors affect this problem, especially, the ergonomic factors. Objective. To assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among healthcare workers in Cao Bang General Provincial Hospital, Vietnam and determine risk factors associated with musculoskeletal disorders. Material and methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 85 healthcare workers in a general provincial hospital in Vietnam using the Nordic questionnaire and questionnaire. Results. High prevalence of musculoskeletal among healthcare workers during the past 12 months (62.4%) and last 7 days (45.9%), with the two most common sites being low back pain (48.2%) and neck (40%). Gender, work experience, total working hours, night shift work, and stress level showed the association with the MSDs in the past 12 months. Conclusion. Due to the high prevalence of MSDs among healthcare workers in a general provincial hospital, preventive actions are needed to improve the working conditions and to raise the awareness of healthcare workers about MSDs prevention.
This document summarizes a journal club presentation on a study evaluating changes in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in brain tumor patients before and after surgery. The study assessed 258 patients using the EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-BN20 questionnaires before and 3-6 months after surgery. After surgery, global QOL and emotional function improved significantly, while physical function declined. Larger tumor size, younger age, and lack of preoperative deficits were associated with poorer postoperative QOL. The study concluded that several factors influence HRQOL in brain tumor patients, and further research is needed to better understand long-term changes and ways to enhance QOL.
This study examined musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among 100 medical care professionals working in two hospitals in Lorestan, Iran. The most common areas of pain reported were back pain (26% of participants at the first hospital and 20% at the second) and neck pain (20% at both hospitals). The majority (87-88%) of participants stated they did not receive treatment or pain management for their MSDs. While most (64%) felt stress was not associated with their pain, 36% reported their pain worsened with increased stress. The high rates of MSDs among these medical professionals suggests preventative measures are needed to address causes like improper posture and mechanics.

Nursesí practices and perception of delirium in the intensive care units of ...Alexander Decker
This document summarizes a study that assessed critical care nurses' practices and perceptions of delirium among critically ill patients in Egyptian intensive care units. The study found that nurses ranked delirium assessment as their fourth priority and that more than half of nurses never assessed for delirium in patients. All nurses reported never receiving training on assessing or managing delirium. While delirium is common in ICU patients and associated with poor outcomes, the study results indicate that it remains under-recognized and under-assessed among ICU patients in Egypt due to lack of protocols, tools, and education for nurses. The study highlights the need to incorporate delirium assessment and management into nursing education and daily ICU care to improve outcomes for critically ill patients.
This study assessed perceptions and attitudes toward cancer treatment among 836 participants in Saudi Arabia. It found that most participants believed cancer patients should be informed of their diagnosis and treatment options. However, participants also had deficiencies in their cancer knowledge - nearly half felt they needed more information. While most were open to conventional treatments like chemotherapy and surgery, over half were also open to alternative therapies. The study concluded that cancer prevention strategies should aim to reduce knowledge disparities in the population through increased awareness and education initiatives.
This study assessed adherence to recommendations for follow-up imaging made in emergency abdominal ultrasound examinations. Of 1404 exams, recommendations were made in 329 reports (23.4%), totaling 355 recommendations. Adherence was 52.9%, defined as the recommended study being performed. Adherence was influenced by factors like ultrasound findings being abnormal versus normal, the organ system/pathology involved, and whether findings matched clinical suspicion. Addressing these factors could improve adherence and continuity of patient care.
The document discusses issues related to measuring and modeling medication adherence using claims data. It covers calculating adherence measures like MPR and PDC, defining adherence thresholds, handling primary non-compliance, and addressing endogeneity and selection bias when modeling adherence as an independent variable to estimate its impact on outcomes. Here are some reflective thoughts on those questions:
- Muscle wasting can be a sign of protein malnutrition, but it can also be caused by other factors like illness, inactivity, hormonal imbalances, etc. Protein status alone does not determine muscle mass.
- In a healthy person getting adequate calories and protein in their regular diet, additional protein supplementation alone will not necessarily increase muscle mass beyond normal limits. Building muscle requires both adequate protein intake and progressive resistance exercise over time to stimulate muscle protein synthesis.
- Dietary protein is broken down into amino acids during digestion. It is then absorbed into the bloodstream from the small intestine. Muscle protein synthesis requires a balanced supply of all essential amino acids from dietary sources. Simply

This document provides an overview of Islamic investment banking. It discusses how the global financial crisis has highlighted strengths of the Islamic banking model such as its more conservative approach and emphasis on asset-backed transactions. However, it also notes that many Islamic banks in the GCC region have a narrow focus on real estate, lacking the diversified product and service offering of conventional investment banks. The foreword argues that Islamic banks should use this opportunity to strengthen the Islamic investment banking model and build a more resilient industry through long-term strategies including diversification and partnerships with conventional banks.

This study explored barriers to implementing pharmaceutical care in UAE community pharmacies through surveys of 357 pharmacists. The main barriers identified were lack of time (64.7%), insufficient staff (61.9%), and lack of motivation (61.1%). Barriers varied somewhat between emirates. For example, in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, lack of time due to high workload was a major issue. In Sharjah, lack of patient information was cited, while lack of motivation was key in Ajman. Pharmacists expressed willingness to adopt pharmaceutical care but recognized significant obstacles. Addressing barriers like time constraints, understaffing, and lack of resources may help enable pharmacists to expand their role in patient care.
Occupational hazards are common in the field of dentistry. Dentists face a variety of biological, physical, ergonomic, and psychological hazards. Biological hazards, like exposure to Hepatitis B and HIV, pose serious risks due to the potential for transmission through needle sticks or contact with blood and saliva. Dentists have a higher risk of contracting certain infections compared to the general population. Other common occupational hazards for dentists include musculoskeletal problems, noise exposure, radiation exposure, allergic reactions, and job-related stress. Proper training, immunization, and safety precautions are needed to help protect dental workers from the various occupational health risks they may encounter.
Drug abuse has now become a major public health problem in Nigeria requiring urgent attention. Although drug abuse cut across all age groups, the youths are however the most affected. This study aimed at assessing Community Pharmacists involvement in the rehabilitation of drug abuse victims. The study was carried out in Abuja Municipal Area Council, questionnaires were administered to Community Pharmacists practicing within the Area Council. A total of 176 Community Pharmacists participated in the study, and slightly above a quarter (27.43%) of them had post-graduate degrees. More than three-quarters (79.5%) of the study participants had received training on drug abuse. A total of 89.2% of the study participants had come across persons suspected to be abusing prescription medicines. Almost all (96.6%) of the study participants indicated that they are willing to advise persons suspected to be abusing drugs on the dangers of drug abuse, and 88.1% of the study participants had spoken to clients concerning abuse of prescription medicines. Also, more than three-quarters (80.1%) of the study participants indicated that pharmacists’ role in the prevention of drug abuse is very important. The study has revealed that Community Pharmacists can play an invaluable role in the rehabilitation of drug abuse victims in Nigeria.
- The study aimed to evaluate community pharmacists' knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting in the United Arab Emirates.
- Only 4.9% of pharmacists demonstrated good knowledge of ADR reporting, while 93.7% had positive attitudes. However, only 3.6% had submitted an ADR report and 11.2% had good reporting practices.
- There is a lack of knowledge regarding ADR reporting requirements and procedures in the UAE despite generally positive attitudes among pharmacists. Increased education and awareness efforts are needed to improve pharmacovigilance in the country.
Medication Administration Errors at Children's University Hospitals: Nurses P...iosrjce
Medication administration errors(MAE) can threaten patient outcomes and are a dimension of
patient safety directly linked to nursing care. Children are particularly vulnerable to medication errors because
of their unique physiology and developmental needs.
Aims: The present study aims to examine types, stages and causes of medication errors. Barriers of medication
administration errors reporting and its facilitator at pediatric University hospitals from nurses point of view.
Methods: A descriptive study was conducted in Pediatric intensive care units, medical, surgical and urology
ward of children's university hospital at Mansoura University, intensive care units, kidney dialysis at
Abouelrash pediatric hospital and general wards of Elmonaira at Cairo University Hospitals. 80 nurses were
included in the study after fulfilling the criteria of selection. A structured interview questionnaire that consists
of four sections was used.
Results: The highest types of medication errors as reported by studied nurses occurred when the medication is
delivered by the wrong route, the highest stage of medication errors done by nurses was missing of medication
then patient monitoring and administration and the highest cause of medication errors was due to heavy
workload. The results of this study indicated that the strongest perceived barriers to medication administration
errors reporting were fear from consequences of reporting, then managerial factor and then the process of
reporting from the nurse's viewpoint. The nurses agree that identifying benefits of reporting followed agree that
feeling safe about working environment, and agree that good professional relationship with physicians was the
most facilitating factors of reporting medication errors.
Conclusions: It was concluded that medication errors result from interrelated factors, the strongest perceived
barriers to medication administration errors reporting were fear from consequences of reporting, and good
relationship with nurse managers and physicians were the most facilitators of reporting medication errors.
Recommendation: The study recommended that the assessment of medication errors should be done
periodically and in- service training program about medication administrations should be applied

This document discusses multisource feedback (MSF) and its use in physician assessment and revalidation. It provides evidence from various studies that MSF can reliably and validly assess physician competencies. However, it also notes limitations in terms of its ability to consistently change physician behavior and the high costs associated with MSF programs. Overall, the document presents both sides of the debate around using MSF as an essential component of physician revalidation.
Systematic reviews of adverse effects and other topics not – yet – covered by...Cochrane.Collaboration
The document discusses two important issues that are often not fully addressed in Cochrane reviews: adverse effects and applicability of findings. It notes that many Cochrane reviews underemphasize adverse effects and that randomized controlled trials have limitations for assessing harms. Observational studies can provide supplemental information on harms. The document also discusses how applicability of findings to real-world settings can be better assessed through improved reporting of factors like population characteristics, interventions, and outcomes. A standardized approach is needed to distinguish efficacy from pragmatic trials.
This document summarizes a professional forum discussing workplace safety and injury prevention for occupational therapists in Canada. The forum included presentations on common work-related injuries experienced by occupational therapists, which tend to be musculoskeletal injuries to the back, shoulders, and wrists from patient handling and repetitive tasks. Injuries were also linked to equipment use like splinting and computers. Survey results found that over 13% of occupational therapists reported multiple injuries. Recommendations included more education on safe patient handling techniques and advocacy for appropriate workplace equipment and environments. The document concludes more must be done to address risks specific to occupational therapy practice and reduce injuries.
The document provides background on the development and evaluation of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP), a 49-item questionnaire that measures self-reported impacts of oral conditions on quality of life. It was developed based on a conceptual model identifying 7 dimensions of impact. Statements about impacts were identified through interviews and weights assigned through paired comparisons. Evaluation found it has good reliability and validity. Studies using the OHIP have found higher scores associated with poorer oral health and access to care. While capturing a single dimension of impact, further research is needed on its ability to identify priority groups and outcomes.
Comparative cost effectiveness of two interventions to promote work functioni...Cindy Noben
1. The study evaluated the cost-effectiveness of two interventions to improve work functioning among nurses with mental health issues: screening followed by referral to an occupational physician, and screening followed by e-mental health interventions.
2. At 6-month follow-up, work functioning improved in 20%, 24%, and 16% of nurses in the control, occupational physician, and e-mental health groups, respectively. The occupational physician intervention had lower average annual costs per nurse (€1,266) compared to the control (€1,752) and e-mental health (€1,375) groups.
3. The occupational physician intervention dominated the control intervention, meaning it achieved better outcomes at lower costs,
1. The study evaluated the efficacy of an adherence strategy using a computer alert system and telephone support to improve adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART).
2. The rates of dispensed ART, which indirectly indicate adherence, significantly increased from 2006 to 2009 after implementing the intervention. Viral load levels also significantly increased compared to baseline.
3. A computer system was designed to alert staff of delays in medication pickup and trained personnel contacted patients by telephone. This centralized monitoring combined with communication support improved long-term adherence and clinical outcomes.
In India, Reproductive Tract Infection (RTI) including Sexually transmitted Diseases (STDs) produce a huge disease burden. Nursing staff plays a major role in prevention of STI/RTIs. So this study was conducted aimed to know the knowledge about STIs/RTIs of nursing personnel of a tertiary care hospital of Rajasthan. 100 nursing professionals were supervised for practice and interrogated for attitude and knowledge as per a semi- structured schedule. It was found that overall mean score of nurses was 56% and only 52% had scores passing marks (>50%). Although this knowledge about STI/RTI was not found to be associated religion, caste, type of family and socio-economic status but it was found to be associated with sex, marital status and education of nurses. It was also found in this study that gap of training decreases the knowledge and number of training increases the knowledge. It was found to be associated with department where the nurses were working. So all the nurses irrespective of place of posting should be given refresher trainings at regular intervals.

Reducing no-shows and cancellations is important for dental offices. Pride Institute estimates cancellation rates as high as 30%. The document provides tips to lower cancellation rates by making patients feel heard, in control of their care, and having their needs met. Offices should develop rapport with patients, acknowledge their questions respectfully, and focus on patient needs rather than scheduling issues when cancellations occur. When confirming appointments, offices should speak to patients in everyday terms to build understanding and relationship. Following these practices can help reduce empty chair time and stress in dental offices.
