Finland’s health expenditure amounted to EUR 21.1 billion in 2018. Compared to the previous year, the health care
expenditure increased by 1.1 per cent in real terms. The per capita expenditure was EUR 3,829.
The health expenditure corresponded to 9.0 per cent of GDP in 2018, which was 0.2 percentage points less than the year
before.
Expenditure on specialised medical care (EUR 7.7 billion) and primary health care (EUR 3.3 billion) accounted for around
one half of the health expenditure in 2018.
Expenditure on prescription medicines in outpatient care (EUR 2.2 billion) increased by 8.6 per cent in real terms compared
to the previous year
In services for older people, expenditure on institutional care (444,3 million euros) continued to decrease, whereas
expenditure on residential services with 24-hour care increased further.
In 2018, public funding accounted for 75.8 per cent and private funding for 24.2 per cent of the health expenditure. The
share of public funding increased by 0.5 percentage points year-on-year.
