- 2. What does health and safety mean • Heath and safety rules: are a group of instructions which must be considered first before starting with any job to keep our people (students and employees) in safe, otherwise more critical accidents will happen in the universities, hospitals and so on. • Our people have to be familiar in details with health and safety rules to minimise the risks as much as they can.
- 3. Overview • There has been a large increase in the number of persons employed in medical laboratories in the last 25 years. • These workers are exposed to a variety of infective agents at their workplaces for instance, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Salmonella typhi, Brucella, and serum hepatitis virus. • Also, People who work in the lab may expose to chemical and physical hazards such as toxic chemicals, radiations and so on.
- 4. Infectious diseases • Many researchers extensively focused on this subject, for example, Sulkin and Pike report 3921 cases. • The most common infective diseases are Tuberculosis, Serum hepatitis, Salmonellosis, Brucellosis and also herpes B group.

Accidents • Although infections which come from medical labs are the most dangerous than other hazards, however, Accident rates also were relatively high. • In a survey of a 12% random sample of English laboratories, it has been observed that 2520 workers in 39 laboratories have been injured in the haematology department a consequence of using glassware.
- 6. What can we do to reduce the risks Some points are really important and must be considered in the medical lab. Personal Safety 1. Wearing safety glasses or goggles in the laboratory to protect your eyes. 2. Always wear laboratory coat with Appropriate gloves. 3. Wear breathing mask if you have an allergy.
- 7. Personal Hygiene 1. Wash hands before leaving the lab and also when you eat somethings. 2. Never mouth suck anything in a pipette in the laboratory. 3. Never eat, drink or smoke in a laboratory. 4. Never touch your face, mouth or eyes.
- 8. Laboratory Equipment • Never use any laboratory equipment you if have not trained before to avoid any damage may occur with you for instance breaking down the instrument cost more much money.
- 9. Housekeeping General tidiness is also a critical point to consider • Keep your workplace tidy • Make sure everything is safe before you leave • Clear up waste and clean your work place.
- 10. How to deal with blood spillage • Use only disposable towel and gloves to clean up the contaminated area. • If the spilled blood includes broken glasses, never, pick up the broken glass wares directly using your hands. • Instead is to use mechanical tools such as tongue or brush.
- 11. The main hazards which can be occur in the medical lab • Infections come from biological fluids • Burns come from chemicals • Injuries come from glass wares • Electric shocks and fire
