This document provides information about a Health and Career Education 8/9 course. It introduces the instructor, Ms. Morris, and outlines expectations for the class. Welcome to Health and Career 8/9! This semester we will meet every second day to look at
various ways for people to make healthy choices throughout their lives as well as do some
explorations around career opportunities and what might interest you as a career one day.
Expectations:
• Be on-time with all supplies ready
• Materials needed: agenda, binder, pencils, pens, eraser, ruler, sometimes pencil crayons,
scissors and glue.
• Leave all cell phones, iPods and other electronic devices in your locker.
We will do a variety of activities in order for you to show your learning, these include (but are not
limited to) individual and group work, notes, questions/worksheets, journal entries, videos, quizzes,
and projects. The assignments are not optional and I expect you to complete all of them to the best
of your ability and on time.
The reverse side of this outline needs to go home and be signed by your parent or guardian and
returned to me by the end of the week.
This course has content that may be uncomfortable for some, we need to be very respectful of our
peers. Remember that we all the right to our beliefs and opinions and we need to respect that with
our peers. Our questions and comments need to be respected, taken seriously and stay
confidential.
If you need to find me, I am usually in Room 206a or 206b. I can be available before school, lunch
or after school if you need extra help with any of your assignments.

2. Dear Parent/Guardian;
Health and Career Education may contain sensitive information and because of this, it is important to
include parents on the subject matter. We at the school feel that the family is the primary educator in the
development of student’s attitudes and values. The school plays a supportive role by focusing on the
prescribed learning outcomes in the HCE 8/9 curriculums. Parents and guardians can support, enrich and
extend the curriculum at home if they so choose to.
The following is an excerpt from the provincially legislated Resource Package for Health and Career
Education 8/9 curriculum. Therefore, these are the topics we will be covering throughout the semester.
It is expected that students will:
Health
Healthy Living
• Relate the characteristics of a healthy lifestyle to their ability to maximize personal potential
• Analyze how healthy eating habits can support a healthy lifestyle
• Describe practices that promote healthy sexual decision making
• Assess the short-term and long-term consequences of unsafe sexual behaviour
Healthy Relationships
• Propose strategies for building and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships
• Describe skills for avoiding or responding to unhealthy, abusive or exploitative relationships
• Describe effective and appropriate responses to bullying, discrimination, harassment and
intimidation
Safety and Injury Prevention
• Propose strategies to avoid unnecessary risk in a variety of situations on the road and in the
community
• Describe strategies to avoid unnecessary risks on the job
Substance Misuse Prevention
• Assess the potential physical, emotional and social consequences for themselves and others if they
misuse substances
Education and Careers
• Examine ways of exploring career options and sources of support for education and career planning
• Describe and demonstrate various employability skills and ways to improve skills
• Demonstrate an understanding of the Grade 10 requirements of the Graduation Programs
