The document discusses remediation in new media through the lens of games. It explores the debate between narratologists and ludologists in game studies. Remediation is defined as the process by which new media refashions older media and vice versa. Both new and old media invoke immediacy through removing mediation and hypermediacy by emphasizing the medium. Games are changing and expanding beyond consoles and PCs to include augmented reality and location-based games.
The document discusses different types of social networks and networked publics. It describes centralized, decentralized, and distributed network topologies. It also outlines four key properties of networked publics according to Boyd: persistence, searchability, replicability, and invisible audiences. Examples of social networks currently used are also provided.

Mass media is characterized by large-scale production and distribution of content to many receivers with an asymmetrical power dynamic between producers and receivers. The relationship is impersonal and anonymous, and content is standardized. In contrast, new media involves two-way communication between many individuals at low cost, without hierarchies and with highly personal relationships based on shared culture and diverse niche content. Mass media content is determined by commercialization pressures, official framing of issues, and pre-mediation of messages, while McLuhan argued the medium itself is the primary message rather than the content it delivers.
This document discusses different types of social networks and how they have evolved over time. It outlines how virtual communities in the 1990s allowed people to communicate online over shared interests, while social software in the 2000s enabled users to interact and share data. The document also examines how people present themselves on social networks through their profiles, which can be impoverished, changing, public, hidden, or reveal their knowledge of others. It notes how friending and unfriending on networks can impact relationships as people may already know friends offline.
