This document discusses heavy metal contamination from tannery operations. During the liming process, which uses sodium sulfide and lime to dissolve hair and proteins from hides, heavy metals like arsenic, lead, and manganese are released from the hair into wastewater. Testing found these heavy metals present in hair, liming agents, and liming wastewater from cow, goat, buffalo and sheep hides. The wastewater from tanneries containing heavy metals is often discharged directly into aquatic environments, posing a threat to enter the food chain and groundwater and harm human health over time. The document recommends tanneries adopt alternative hair-saving liming processes like enzymatic treatments to prevent heavy metal pollution.
