Shapeshifting has been a common theme in mythology and folklore for centuries. Many legendary creatures from ancient Greek and Norse mythology had the ability to transform their physical form, often to trick or deceive humans. More modern depictions of shapeshifters include characters from The Lord of the Rings and The Vampire Diaries who can shift between human and animal forms. While shapeshifters were once feared, the modern conception portrays many as peaceful beings who cannot fully control their abilities. Some groups now work to protect shapeshifters from those who would hunt them for sport.

- 2. Normally supernatural creatures are seen to be living amongst humans however we could subvert this by having a village which is inhibited by supernatural creatures only. This would also lead to another subversion as most super natural films have a convention of hidden identity however as they would be in a enclosed village there will be no need to hide creatures.
- 3. To subvert the stereotypes for a vampire we could ensure that the vampires would live in the open with no secrecy aspect. For example Dracula lives in a castle out in Transylvania however we could make the vampire live in a open house in the country and act like a normal citizen who comes out in the day and the night. No restrictions from sunlight, garlic etc.
- 4. Subversion of ghost adverts Take human form instead of shadows/ blankets/ transparency Heroes instead of villains
- 5. Mind control is normally portrayed to be used to do immoral things such as killing other people or carry out acts of terror, eg in twilight mind control is used as a act of torture. However we could subvert this stereotype by making them control people for doing good things for example stopping bad things happening or changing bad people to good. Also mind control can not only be changing physical behaviour but can also change the persons emotions etc.
- 6. Usually films portray werewolves as evil characters and are usually shown to be murdering or injuring someone physically. A subversion of the werewolf genre would be that they have the power of when to transform or not transform at all as usually they transform at night only during a full moon. Werewolves are “burned by the touch of silver”. If silver pierces a Werewolf's skin while in wolf form, it will grow weak and revert back to its Human form. However we could make them completely immortal so they can not be harmed by silver.
- 7. A stereotype of a fairy is a pretty female with wings, this could be subverted by having a male character who isn’t good looking without wings. Another subversion could be that the fairy could be a villain rather than a hero. Cream It makes them drunk Iron - Can harm them Silver- Burn 'dark' fairies Salt & Sugar - By pouring salt or sugar on the floor in front of a fairy, no matter how strong they are, must get down and count each grain until done. Destroying the spell book that they were summoned from.
