Systematic Literature Review involves objective data collection and analysis of the literature with predefined
criteria. Systematic reviews forms basis for Meta Analyses of gathered data.
Unlike the general notion that systematic reviews are only used for producing high impact review research
articles in the academia, the same technique can be used in the industrial domain for Patent competitive
analysis, Reverse Engineering, Corporate strategy formulation, New product development, Market research
etc.
The peer reviews consider Systematic Literature reviews over traditional literature reviews as it is more
objective with less bias making it reproducible and updatable.
This Flames Research Series -01 as envisaged by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is aimed at
Academic version of Systematic Literature Review. This will be followed by Industrial Systematic review as part
of Flames Research Series -02.

Step6 : Use the Search Engine filters to suit your research
Science Direct is a better search engine than google for
Systematic literature review as it has good filtering options

Always rename the

Step8 : Keep both papers and their citations as predefined folders
For Collaborative Research - Form a Cloud Drive(Google Drive) – avoid multiple emails back and forth (very
inefficient!)

Step9 : Critical Appraisal of Each Paper
Judge each paper’s
• Trustworthiness,
• Value
• Relevance
in a particular context (Burls, 2009).
•Has the research been conducted in a way that minimises bias? (Is it trustworthy?)
•What is the impact and importance of the findings? (What is the research's value?)
•Are the results applicable to your patient/population/problem? (Is it relevant to your research question?)

appraisal? http://www.bandolier.org.uk/painres/download/whatis/What_is_critical_appraisal.pdf

Useful Tools
•NVivo (CSU supported and great for qualitative data analysis)
•PSPP (Open source software)
•JASP (Open source software)

complexity. Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, 62(5), 506-510.

Step10 : Specific Data Extraction
Only extract the data that is exactly needed by your objectives . Don’t be swayed by other distractive data.
Create a data format –Table with field titles
Use data labeling where required
Test your data extraction with 10 papers before doing it for 100 papers.

Step 11 : Writing and Publishing
Step 12 : Updating your Review
In Journals, Book Series , Conference papers
If it is a pure review using Systematic review ,You need to call the paper title as “Systematic Literature Review”
In the introduction of the paper, you need to define clearly all the methodologies used in Steps1 to 7
After few years, Update your review by new edition - a new journal paper citing old journal paper and continuing
from there.
