DSL was invented in 1988 by Joe Lechleider and allows internet access through a phone line connection to a modem. It has evolved from ADSL to DSL and provides advantages like not needing a daily payment and wireless connectivity for laptops, though desktops require many wires. DSL speeds and costs have increased over time but it still requires a phone jack and can be substituted by SIM.
