By 1800 the least amount of land owned is 320 acres. The settlers had to pay 4 payments for $1.25
pre acre until 1854. The Federal Government makes a law that they only had to pay for 30 years,
then 54 years in 1785. They could only own 640 acres for a township split into 36 sections. 1854
they made the cost for 12 ½ cents. The Legislation was stymied three times in 1852, 1854, 1859.
They passed the Homestead act in 1859 [the House of representatives passed it], in 1862 the
homestead came law. This was before the slavery removal act. In 1862 you could pay a $1.25 per
acre for six months after the Civil–War. The people who did have the Homestead act for 160 acres

Pioneer Bluffs Essay
Located in the heart of the Flint Hills, Pioneer Bluffs, a classic farmstead north of Matfield Green
with a natural beauty and repository of Kansas farming and ranching heritage, is now a respected
arts and education center. It is also a National Register Historic District with a classic early 20th
century farm house, barns, and old limestone fence. Visitors can engage nature, art, and history
through Prairie Talk discussions, The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs contemporary art exhibit, and
Maud's Garden which grows local foods. In addition, the venue hosts the Fall Festival and other
community events. In doing so, Pioneer Bluffs carries on the Rogler legacy of respecting the land,
preserving history, and engaging community.
The story of Pioneer Bluffs began in 1859 when Charles Rogler, a young Austrian immigrant,
walked more than three hundred miles from Iowa to build a new life in Kansas. His plot was at the
confluence of a river and creek with a mix of bottomland prairie for crops, timber for building and
fuel, miles of open prairie for livestock pasturage, and limestone bluff for protection. Charles
survived violence, drought, and disease to expand his 160–acre homestead into a 1,800–acre farm
that supplied all of the family's needs. Charles' son, Henry took over the operation c.1898 and
named the homestead "Pioneer Bluffs." He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Miller Hand Count There Analysis
In 1952 Howard J. Williams, who was the maternal grandfather of Instructor Dean Brumley, wrote a
brief narrative of his trip in to Perkins County in South Dakota from Iowa during the fall of 1907. In
this brief narrative Williams recalls his departure from Miller Hand County in Iowa on October
25th, 1907 to Homestead in South Dakota in which he settled after first arriving there on November
5th of 1907 which he notes was an election day. Towards the end of this selection, Williams notes
that he was sixty–seven years old at the time of writing this narrative and that he had lived in South
Dakota for forty–five years up to this point and thought that he would eventually die there. By
looking at the date provided by Howard Williams of his trip to Perkins County, as well as, other
factors such as his age at the time of writing the brief narrative along with the length of time he
stated as having lived in South Dakota it becomes clear that he was born in 1885 and embarked on
this trip at the young age of twenty–two years old. He recollects that he made the trip to Homestead
with two other individuals and notes that he had a camping outfit and a ten by twelve sized tent.
This journey was made by team and wagon as at the time this was one of the main forms of
transportation used. This journey from Iowa's Miller Hand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

head over to Perkins County in South Dakota where he seemingly had no family. By choosing to
embark on this journey this late in October gives the impression that Mr. Williams was desperate for
a fresh start and did not consider the risk of making a trip this late as a deterrent to him having the
opportunity to start a new life. Williams may have also considered that with him being in the prime
of his life at twenty–two years of age that he would be able to survive the harsh weather in these

Westward Expansion Research Paper
There are two events that triggered the biggest migration in US history. First was the passage of the
Homestead Act in 1862; each family that was willing to settle to the West was granted at least 160
acres of land. Second was the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869, when it was
finally possible to send the agricultural products such as live cattle to the more populated areas
within less than a week. In addition, the frontiers were also able to get the much–needed tools and
equipment by trains from those big cites. During this period, different groups of people had
experienced huge yet completely different changes with their lives. Some experienced happiness
and hope, while others experienced hardship and tragedy. Native ... Show more content on

As we could imagine, the lands granted to each settler's family were most likely already occupied by
a Native American tribe. For the new settlers to move in, the old settlers must move out. Even with
the retreats of Native Americans, there were still continuing attempts to completely annihilate
Native Americans. In addition, the white settlers were always trying to create incidents that sparked
tension and resistance from Native Americans. According to an article written by Chief Joseph,
"Some white men branded our young cattle so they could claim them. We had no friends who would
plead our cause before the law councils." (Shi & Mayer, 52) With very provocative white settlers,
Chief Joseph was very tired with keeping young Indians from "doing rash things." Chief Joseph
surrendered to General Howard in 1877 with the hope to coexist with the whites. However, the
government had been breaking its treaties and his friends also kept breaking their promises. Chief
Joseph was very frustrated that "the Government sends a man out to fight us, as it did General
Miles, and then breaks his word. Such government has something wrong with it..." In addition,
Native Americans were hoping to be treated the same as everyone else in this country. Chief Joseph
stated in his words "We only ask an even chance to live as other men live", yet they fought hard for
this goal with no good

Daniel Boone Research Paper
The famous trail blazer and frontiersman Daniel Boone spent his early childhood on what is now the
Daniel Boone Homestead. He grew up on the homestead, where he learned to love the wilderness.
In 1750, when Daniel was fifth teen years old, his parents decided to move from the homestead.
They moved to western North Carolina where they could own more land. After his family moved,
other noble families like the Maugridge and DeTurks bought the land and lived there. They built
many additions to the 579 acres of land, such as adding saw mills, barns, blacksmith houses and the
remodeling the Boone home itself. The historical site of the Daniel Boone Homestead was preserved

attraction and neat structure to see was the sawmill. It showed how the families got and sawed their

Essay Abraham Lincoln
As the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln was known to be the greatest American President. He
guided his country through one of the most catastrophic experiences in its history, the Civil War. He
was a very unique president, being the first president to have a beard, being the tallest president
standing at 6'4 and also being the first to be assassinated. Abe Lincoln accomplished many things in
the 4 year term he had served before being assassinated. With his intelligence and hard work, he
made a difference in the United States. For example he released the Emancipation Proclamation
which was one of his greatest accomplishments. He passed the Homestead Act, Morrill Act, and

Abraham Lincoln had various jobs. He worked as a store keeper, and later was chosen to become
militia captain in the Black Hawk War and postmaster. Lincoln's political career began in 1832.
Even though he did not win a seat in the State Legislature, two years later he won a seat as a Whig.
He served four terms as a Whig and by doing so he started becoming popular statewide. Lincoln
later began to study law and in 1836 he was licensed to practice. Being successful he moved to the
new capital Springfield. November 2, 1842 he married Mary Todd who came from a very wealthy
family later had four sons by the name of Robert, Edward, William, and Thomas. Out of the four
only Robert had survived into adulthood. Forming a partnership with William H. Herndon Lincoln
became Illinois's brightest lawyers. In 1858 Lincoln ran against Stephen A. Douglas for Senator. He
lost the election, but in debating with Douglas he gained a national reputation that won him the
Republican nomination for President in 1860 (www.whitehouse.gov/).
As president of the United States, Abraham accomplished a lot in four years. One of his major
achievements that will always be remembered and still recognized today that had made a difference

Abraham Lincoln's Impact On The United States
"In the end, it's not the years in your life that count, it's the life in your years". This means it is not
the number of years that you live, but what you do with your life is important. Abraham Lincoln
impacted the citizens of the United States because he led the Union to victory because of slavery, he
abolished slavery completely, and he signed the first of the homestead acts.
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12,1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky. Lincoln had a brother

Everyday Use
When we meet our narrator, the mother of Maggie and Dee, she is waiting in the yard with Maggie
for Dee to visit. The mother takes simple pleasure in such a pleasant place where, "anyone can come
back and look up at the elm tree and wait for the breezes that never come inside the house." (Walker
383) This is her basic attitude, the simple everyday pleasures that have nothing to do with great
ideas, cultural heritage or family or racial histories. She later reveals to us that she is even more the
rough rural woman since she, "can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man." (Walker 383)
Hardly a woman one would expect to have much patience with hanging historical quilts on a wall.
Daughter Maggie is very much the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the quilts has a tiny piece of blue cloth from Great Grandpa Ezra's Civil War uniform.
Mother offers Dee two other quilts instead because the ones Dee wants are promised to Maggie for
when Maggie marries, but Dee won't settle for those since the other quilts are not as old and are not
entirely hand made. Maggie even volunteers to give up her claim on the quilts, but Mother refuses
to allow that.
Just before Dee leaves, she tells her mother, "You just don't understand...your heritage."( Walker
389)
After Dee drives away, Mother and Maggie remained in the yard, "just enjoying, until it was time to
go in the house and go to bed." (Walker 389)
The essential question being explored by Alice Walker is the conflict between someone who has
recently "discovered" her family and racial heritage and wants to preserve its symbols (Dee) and
someone who has lived intimately with those "symbols" in their utilitarian sense (Momma). Dee has
left the old rural homestead and its "backward" ways behind her. Indeed, when she first left for
school, Momma offered Dee one of the old quilts that Dee now covets, but Dee refused because
"they were old fashioned, out of style." (Walker 388) Now, Dee returns home looking for heritage
treasures which she hopes to rescue from being used and worn out or being left in the bottom of a
trunk. This all rings true with her adopting her new African name and her male companion who
sports similar attributes. This story was

Childhood : Childhood On The Homestead
Many things could be said about childhood on the homestead seeing as it was cut short in eighteen
eighty–three. Notwithstanding, the children who survived childbirth was more often than not settled
into a life of risk. During this time era, children were at constant risk of illness and disease. With
this in mind, as chores came into play, an abundance of risks came into existence. As a result,
children often became the victim of infection if the wounds were not properly cleaned. In the end, a
risk was like a person's life long companion. In spite of all of the risks and danger, it was the life
they lived. Albeit, there was one way for a child to escape their chores and parents' rules. In other

They were to make sure that every student understood the content that they were teaching. Whereas,
on the homestead, the teacher had fewer students and could teach individually if need be. That in
itself is a rarity that is barely found in today's school system. Be that as it may, the teacher often had
activities to deter their students' boredom. These activities often consisted of learning the guitar to
playing games.
Schools on the homestead started in the late eighteenth century, each consisting of only one room.
The setup of the schoolhouses was rather unadorned in construction and often unembellished. As a
result of more school houses being in rural and secluded most did not have water or sanitation. Due
to this, wells were converted to toilets and snow from winter was melted into water. When these
were not options, teachers often relied on nearby homesteads to provide water. During this time,
teachers had often lived in the schoolhouse in a separate section or lived with a family in one of the
homesteads. The typical school day for a child in the eighteenth century totaled a seven–hour time
period. Starting from nine in the morning to four in the afternoon, students were required to be in
the school building as mandated by the law. A multitude of the parents refused to permit their
children to attend school. Preferring them to continue working on the land given to the family, even
if it went against the law.

Rise of Industry in the Late 19th Century
During the 1860's America was in a period of economic hardship due to the ongoing demand for
materials and money to fund the war. In the South, sufficient money and materials were hard to
acquire because the southern economy still depended on the labor of slaves to produce their goods
and income rather than factories. The Northern economy used numerous factories to produce goods
and make profit for the war, but they still did not have technology that was advanced enough to
easily produce all the necessary materials and money. After the civil war, America embarked on a
journey of economic expansion and unification for the nation. In the late 19th century, government

multiplied enormously the effectiveness of labor" (Chandler 277; George 50). As America was
booming from government policies and new technology, population changes also took effect to
contribute to the rise of industry. Population was steadily rising due to immigration, migration, and
improved conditions of living. Millions of European and Asian immigrants came to America in
search of a more promising and successful life. These immigrants created a growing work force that
big industries took advantage of by using the minimally paid workers to help produce more for their
companies. Along with westward migration in America, "In the post–civil war period, cities swelled
in population as a twin migration of immigrants and rural Americans flocked to the glittering urban
environment" (Riis 320). This urbanization solidified the transition of the nation from an
agricultural economy to an industrial one. Also in the 19th century, population was at a high

standard of living. These population changes provided America with a large, growing consumer
economy that allowed industry and business to thrive. Compared to previous times, America ended
the 19th century at an all time high due to new government policies, technological advancements
and population changes. With the help of federal encouragement to settle westward and unite the

Homestead Essay
Carnegie County:
An Analysis of the History and Legacy of Homestead
At the culmination of the nineteenth century in the United States, industrialization was transforming
cities at a lightning pace. With a flurry of immigration and expansion, urban populations were
multiplying by the decade, at a rate twice the speed of the total American population. In 1860, the
city of Chicago had a mere 100,000 residents but by 1890 had exploded to harbor over one million
people. Immigration from southern and eastern Europe had skyrocketed over these few decades,
bringing a new working class and a new backbone for the American industrial economy. This
burgeoning industrial system proved to be very attractive for immigrants across the globe, drawing

One such industrialist was Andrew Carnegie, who capitalized on the expansion of cities and the rail
system by building an empire in steel. The success of Carnegie's operations provided largescale
employment opportunities for European immigrants, but these opportunities came at a cost. Factory
work was a nearly completely unregulated industry, demanding long hours in increasingly
dangerous conditions for incredibly low wages. Carnegie and others began replacing skilled laborers
with heavy machinery to cut costs, opening the door for unskilled immigrant workers to run the
machines. Work for these unskilled laborers was treacherous to say the least, with little to no
precautions taken for employee safety and heavy machinery that would be considered death traps in
today's industries, staying alive was a daily struggle. Around this time, it was estimated that
industrial accidents alone accounted for around 35,000 deaths per year.
As industrialism continued to expand, it spread outside of major cities and soon, mill towns began
dotting the landscape outside of industrial hubs like Pittsburgh. Following in the tradition of
industrial factories, these mill towns were often built up carelessly, with living and working
conditions placed on the back burner in favor of increased profits. One such town, Homestead, was
the center of Andrew Carnegie's steel empire. Built on the Monongahela River just eight miles
outside of Pittsburgh, Homestead had around 12,000

others believe that he should have been given this responsibility. Matt's dad should have left him

opportunities for growth. The first reason Matt's dad should have left Matt at the homestead was he

From the first sentence of the story, the reader can infer that one of the characters is underprivileged.
This inference would be concluded from the description of the little Nebraska village. The words

from the English common law, which came with the colonists to the New World. Since then it has
been established as law in many states across America, and is still spreading. When talking about
Indiana Castle Doctrine, Scott M. Kyrouac, J. D., says "The justification for the use of force – and
the prerequisite for the successful assertion of a successful self–defense or civil immunity claim – is
generally an unlawful entry into the home accompanied by a reasonable belief that the intruder has
committed or will commit a crime in the dwelling." This means that the unlawful entry of a person

commit a crime at the residence, serves as a justifiable reason to use self defense. Marion Hammer

Central Pacific Railroads In The 1870's
The 1800's were a period of technological rapid growth and change for America. The Industrial
Revolution was in full force, and new advances were made in substantial numbers. One of these
breakthroughs was the steam engine powered locomotive, which was first used in 1830. Railroads
were built all over the east coast and encouraged travel and commerce among cities east of the
Missouri River. By 1850, there were almost 9,000 miles of railroad tracks on the east coast, but very
little on the west coast. In 1862, Abraham Lincoln passed the Pacific Railroad Act, which permitted
the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads to begin building the transcontinental railroad. The
Central Pacific Railroad would begin building in Sacramento, and the ... Show more content on

The Homestead Act gave 160 acres of land to anyone who paid a small $10 fee, and would work off
the land for five years. Since the population on the East coast was so massive, Americans from the
eastern states flocked to states such as, Kansas and Nebraska, whose populations grew immensely in
the 1870's. Americans were not the only people to move out West. Many immigrants from all over
Europe, such as Germany, Scotland, Russia, and France, dispersed to the West. America was very
different from their old countries, but they managed to acclimate by bringing along their culture
from their old homes. They created towns similar to theirs in Europe, with the same names and even
street plans. Immigrants also cultivated the same wheat as they did in Europe, which happened to
thrive in the Western climate, and became one of the most successful American crops. If not for the
construction of the transcontinental railroad, immigrants would not have come to America, and the
country would not be the melting pot that it is today. Immigrants shared their culture, which would
shape the country. America would soon blend these cultures into the American society, and would
enjoy the new languages, crops, and knowledge that the immigrants have to

Homestead Act Research Paper
Why did the government encourage migration west by tempting Americans with cheap land? With
the passing of the Homestead Act of 1862, Congress attempted to stimulate agricultural settlements
out west. The Homestead Act promised opportunity and independence to farmers, and presented
many advantages to the economy, trades routes, and mobility for settlers in the new territories.
However, the Act presented numerous adverse effects to the existing groups, as well as
environmental and industrial factors that influenced the settlers. The Homestead Act was a massive
federal program that provided large parcels of free land in the west to settlers. Under the act, which
was designed to encourage Americans to populate the territory acquired sixty years earlier in the
Louisiana Purchase, about 8 percent of the entire United States land mass was transferred from
federal to private ownership (Kidder, Oppenheim 152). Two men primarily responsible for the act
were George Henry Evans and Horace Greely. Evans lobbied the idea of the Homestead Act and
came up with the slogan "vote yourself a farm," thus he was given the title Father of the Homestead
Act. Greely wanted to make it easier and less ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Seeing as a potential sale can be made or broken solely on the external appearance of your home,
investing money into the exterior of your property is often the best way to get the biggest bang for
your buck. One of the most affordable updates for the exterior of your home is landscaping – the
ubiquitous "curb appeal." If you don't have a lot of money to invest, focus on mulching, edging,
removing weeds, greening up your grass, and adding color with flowers and shrubs. Updating
exterior doors is also a fairly inexpensive way to boost your home's value. Because of their low
price and durability, steel entry doors usually offer the highest return on investment of all home
improvement projects. Replacing your garage door(s) can also add significant value to your home.
Finally, don't forget the two most important parts of your home's exterior – the siding and the roof.
Though replacing either can come with a hefty price tag, they protect your house against the
elements, making them the smartest projects to undertake. Homestead Improvements That Save

How Does Cather Use Realism In A Wagner Matinee
In A Wagner Matinee, Willa Cather utilizes realism in order to display the consequences of living
for someone else. Realism particularly focuses on representing middle–class life from the Civil War
in the 1860's to the turn of the century. The story's settings portray a middle–class life wrought with
hardship, regret, and grief. Local realism is weaved throughout the story to emphasize the
consequences of not staying true to one's dreams. Cather draws upon Clark and his aunt Georgiana's
lives as a contrast of life choices. Clark is the example of growth and expansion. He enjoys a life in
the constantly evolving modern world. Meanwhile, Georgiana is tied down by her past choices. She
once lived in the modern world as well. Then, she decides to give up her own happiness in youth to
live the way her husband wishes. Unfortunately, he dies thirty years later and leaves a realization in
his wake: love does not prevail over everything else. Cather stays true to the feelings of Georgiana.
Unlike the romanticism of a fairytale, Georgiana fills with regret after conceding an immense
amount of her time in living for her husband's sake. Couples normally agree to make compromises
for the happiness of both individuals, but they also need ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

memories give her sadness because she left them for a fleeting romance. Maybe she loved her

happiness, which leaves her with no joy of her own. Even memories fade over time which means
reality has left her a poor widow with a home filled full of dull decrepit

His father visibly shows that he endorses the sexist opinion on a woman's role in society, as seen
when he tells Tambu to "Stay at home" and "Learn to cook and clean". This is directly stereotyping

Proper Role Of Government Essay
What is the Proper Role of Government? The proper role of government (gov't.) can vary, every
person has their opinion. The government's proper role is to solve universal problems without
causing destruction. This means that the gov't. helps find a solution that is fair and equal for
everyone. For example the government invented bimetallism to solve the problem with money. The
government made changes to the way Native Americans lived so they became more
"Americanized". The government also made the homestead act which helped people move
westward. After the gov't. encouraged American citizens to move westward, they opened the door to
immigrants. The U.S government has made such an impact on the way we live and how people did
live in the old days. The proper role of the gov't. is to find solutions to the problems that humans
cannot solve without having a excessive argument and without violating people's right. The
government has dealt with the problem of backing up money. Bimetallism changed the currency
from coins to paper money. Bimetallism meant that people would exchange gold or silver for
money. One of the biggest concerns people had was that they wanted to make sure that the money
would be backed up by a good source. Backing their money meant that people wouldn't have to deal
with losing money when they would exchange money for gold or silver. People had debated whether
they should back their money by bimetallism or monometallism. Monometalism is when money is

What Role Did Railroad Play In Westward Expansion
The Old West refers to any area west of the Mississippi River. Its era began in the early 19th century
and ended in 1920 along with the Mexican revolution. The Old West was settled in numerous ways.
Starting April 1, 1803, the Louisiana Purchase played a huge part in westward expansion. In this
purchase, the U.S. gained approximately 828,000,000 square miles of land previously owned by
France. This land extended from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. After the purchase,
westward expansion immediately followed. With westward expansion came conflict. White
Americans began to claim Native American territory as their own. Various treaties presented by the
U.S. government to keep the peace were almost all broken by the government itself. With the Indian

Beginning in 1848, gold was discovered in California. This discovery drew thousands of settlers to
California in hopes of striking gold and becoming rich. Settlers were pouring in, and as a result
towns were appearing overnight. These towns became known as Boom towns. Unfortunately, many
of the settlers did not find gold. Most of the unfortunate settlers moved elsewhere to mine, leaving
deserted towns behind. These deserted towns are called Ghost towns. In 1862, congress
implemented the Homestead Act. This act stated that any American could claim up to 160 acres of
government land for free. However, the land was only free if the owner built a home and grew
crops. Small farmers mostly took advantage of this. The Homestead Act poured in many settlers to

Tradition And Modernity In Tsitsi Dangarembga's 'Nervous...
Early African Literature often puzzled the conflict between tradition and modernity. Western
knowledge was almost automatically associated with modernity while tradition concerned itself
with African cultures and/or histories, the latter often given less value, while Western knowledge
was seen as the obvious path to success and advancement in life. In Nervous Conditions, Tsitsi
Dangarembga presents this dichotomic association and exposes its toxicity through her main female
characters' journeys. In the book, Tambu is plucked from her family with the opportunity of a
colonial education and she is aware from the start that these are unique possibilities that will allow
her to elevate her status. As the story progresses, the effects of Tambu's dissociation from the
homestead start to present themselves and by the end of the novel, the loss of her culture is
crippling. Nyasha undergoes a similar process growing up partly in England, away from her
extended family and her culture. For Tambu, the harmful association of progress with Western
values and culture is revealed through the juxtaposition of the description of her arrival at the
mission in the beginning of her story and her arrival at the Sacred Heart at the end of the novel, as
well as her reaction to the Christian wedding imposed to her parents by her uncle. For Nyasha, her
breakdown at the end of the novel is representative of the toxic dichotomy of modernity and
tradition within African literature. The implication

They could only own 640 acres for a township split into 36 sections. 1854 they made the cost for 12 ½ cents. The Legislation was stymied three times in 1852, 1854, 1859. They passed the Homestead act in 1859 [the House of representatives passed it], in 1862 the homestead came law. This was before the slavery removal act. • 2. Pioneer Bluffs Essay Located in the heart of the Flint Hills, Pioneer Bluffs, a classic farmstead north of Matfield Green with a natural beauty and repository of Kansas farming and ranching heritage, is now a respected arts and education center. It is also a National Register Historic District with a classic early 20th century farm house, barns, and old limestone fence. Visitors can engage nature, art, and history through Prairie Talk discussions, The Gallery at Pioneer Bluffs contemporary art exhibit, and Maud's Garden which grows local foods. In addition, the venue hosts the Fall Festival and other community events. In doing so, Pioneer Bluffs carries on the Rogler legacy of respecting the land, preserving history, and engaging community. The story of Pioneer Bluffs began in 1859 when Charles Rogler, a young Austrian immigrant, walked more than three hundred miles from Iowa to build a new life in Kansas. His plot was at the confluence of a river and creek with a mix of bottomland prairie for crops, timber for building and fuel, miles of open prairie for livestock pasturage, and limestone bluff for protection. Charles survived violence, drought, and disease to expand his 160–acre homestead into a 1,800–acre farm that supplied all of the family's needs. Charles' son, Henry took over the operation c.1898 and named the homestead "Pioneer Bluffs." He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 4. Miller Hand Count There Analysis In 1952 Howard J. Williams, who was the maternal grandfather of Instructor Dean Brumley, wrote a brief narrative of his trip in to Perkins County in South Dakota from Iowa during the fall of 1907. In this brief narrative Williams recalls his departure from Miller Hand County in Iowa on October 25th, 1907 to Homestead in South Dakota in which he settled after first arriving there on November 5th of 1907 which he notes was an election day. Towards the end of this selection, Williams notes that he was sixty–seven years old at the time of writing this narrative and that he had lived in South Dakota for forty–five years up to this point and thought that he would eventually die there. By looking at the date provided by Howard Williams of his trip to Perkins County, as well as, other factors such as his age at the time of writing the brief narrative along with the length of time he stated as having lived in South Dakota it becomes clear that he was born in 1885 and embarked on this trip at the young age of twenty–two years old. He recollects that he made the trip to Homestead with two other individuals and notes that he had a camping outfit and a ten by twelve sized tent. This journey was made by team and wagon as at the time this was one of the main forms of transportation used. This journey from Iowa's Miller Hand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Howard Williams for deciding to leave Miller Hand County in Iowa so close to winter in order to head over to Perkins County in South Dakota where he seemingly had no family. By choosing to embark on this journey this late in October gives the impression that Mr. Williams was desperate for a fresh start and did not consider the risk of making a trip this late as a deterrent to him having the opportunity to start a new life. • 5. Westward Expansion Research Paper There are two events that triggered the biggest migration in US history. First was the passage of the Homestead Act in 1862; each family that was willing to settle to the West was granted at least 160 acres of land. Second was the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869, when it was finally possible to send the agricultural products such as live cattle to the more populated areas within less than a week. In addition, the frontiers were also able to get the much–needed tools and equipment by trains from those big cites. During this period, different groups of people had experienced huge yet completely different changes with their lives. Some experienced happiness and hope, while others experienced hardship and tragedy. Native ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As we could imagine, the lands granted to each settler's family were most likely already occupied by a Native American tribe. For the new settlers to move in, the old settlers must move out. Even with the retreats of Native Americans, there were still continuing attempts to completely annihilate Native Americans. In addition, the white settlers were always trying to create incidents that sparked tension and resistance from Native Americans. According to an article written by Chief Joseph, "Some white men branded our young cattle so they could claim them. We had no friends who would plead our cause before the law councils." (Shi & Mayer, 52) With very provocative white settlers, Chief Joseph was very tired with keeping young Indians from "doing rash things." Chief Joseph surrendered to General Howard in 1877 with the hope to coexist with the whites. However, the government had been breaking its treaties and his friends also kept breaking their promises. Chief Joseph was very frustrated that "the Government sends a man out to fight us, as it did General Miles, and then breaks his word. Such government has something wrong with it..." In addition, Native Americans were hoping to be treated the same as everyone else in this country. Chief Joseph stated in his words "We only ask an even chance to live as other men live", yet they fought hard for this goal with no good ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He grew up on the homestead, where he learned to love the wilderness. In 1750, when Daniel was fifth teen years old, his parents decided to move from the homestead. They moved to western North Carolina where they could own more land. After his family moved, other noble families like the Maugridge and DeTurks bought the land and lived there. They built many additions to the 579 acres of land, such as adding saw mills, barns, blacksmith houses and the remodeling the Boone home itself. It showed how the families got and sawed their own wood for lumber. He guided his country through one of the most catastrophic experiences in its history, the Civil War. The mother takes simple pleasure in such a pleasant place where, "anyone can come back and look up at the elm tree and wait for the breezes that never come inside the house." (Walker 383) This is her basic attitude, the simple everyday pleasures that have nothing to do with great ideas, cultural heritage or family or racial histories. She later reveals to us that she is even more the rough rural woman since she, "can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man." Maggie even volunteers to give up her claim on the quilts, but Mother refuses to allow that. Just before Dee leaves, she tells her mother, "You just don't understand...your heritage."( Walker 389) After Dee drives away, Mother and Maggie remained in the yard, "just enjoying, until it was time to go in the house and go to bed." (Walker 389) The essential question being explored by Alice Walker is the conflict between someone who has recently "discovered" her family and racial heritage and wants to preserve its symbols (Dee) and someone who has lived intimately with those "symbols" in their utilitarian sense (Momma). Dee has left the old rural homestead and its "backward" ways behind her. Indeed, when she first left for school, Momma offered Dee one of the old quilts that Dee now covets, but Dee refused because "they were old fashioned, out of style." (Walker 388) Now, Dee returns home looking for heritage treasures which she hopes to rescue from being used and worn out or being left in the bottom of a trunk. This all rings true with her adopting her new African name and her male companion who sports similar attributes. This story was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Work for these unskilled laborers was treacherous to say the least, with little to no precautions taken for employee safety and heavy machinery that would be considered death traps in today's industries, staying alive was a daily struggle. Realism particularly focuses on representing middle–class life from the Civil War in the 1860's to the turn of the century. The story's settings portray a middle–class life wrought with hardship, regret, and grief. Local realism is weaved throughout the story to emphasize the consequences of not staying true to one's dreams. Cather draws upon Clark and his aunt Georgiana's lives as a contrast of life choices. Clark is the example of growth and expansion. He enjoys a life in the constantly evolving modern world. Meanwhile, Georgiana is tied down by her past choices. She once lived in the modern world as well. Then, she decides to give up her own happiness in youth to live the way her husband wishes. Unfortunately, he dies thirty years later and leaves a realization in his wake: love does not prevail over everything else. Cather stays true to the feelings of Georgiana. Unlike the romanticism of a fairytale, Georgiana fills with regret after conceding an immense amount of her time in living for her husband's sake. Couples normally agree to make compromises for the happiness of both individuals, but they also need ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 33. Homestead Case Study Near UCSF's San Francisco General campus, a tired doctor could be forgiven for overlooking The Homestead as a happy hour choice. With peanut shells on the floor, tastefully ironic boudoir paintings on the walls, and cocktails with names like Corpse Reviver #2, the bar could be yet another Mission hipster hole–in–the–wall. But The Homestead is more than just a place for bearded twenty–somethings (and their omnipresent dogs) to get a pickle and a $2 Tecate. In fact, the bar is the birthplace of UCSF's Institute for Global Orthopedics and Traumatology, a small, innovative program with big worldwide intentions. Sure, IGOT has a proper home in an elegant brick building near General's main entrance, but the heart and soul of the program is the Thursday ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 34. How Is Nhamo Unlikeable In Nervous Conditions, Dangarembga presents Nhamo as an unlikeable character by displaying his negative traits such as arrogance and entitlement through interactions with Tambu. Nhamo also is seen to be unlikeable by expressing discriminatory opinions towards her by repeating "what Baba said" because she is "a girl". By analysing his interactions with his sister, parents and Babamukuru, Nhamo demonstrates how he segregates Tambu and his opinion of the role of women in society. By additionally analysing Nhamo's privileges and his society's impact on his opinions and traits, we can see possible causes for these opinions. Overall he is presented as an unlikeable, self–important and opinionated character. As Nhamo continues to be educated he uses his privileges and studies as an excuse to avoid tasks at the homestead. Tambu explains how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His father visibly shows that he endorses the sexist opinion on a woman's role in society, as seen when he tells Tambu to "Stay at home" and "Learn to cook and clean". This is directly stereotyping the role of a woman in society, becoming an efficient and obedient housewife. Moreover, he confronts Tambu for trying to earn money for her school funds, "Can you cook books and feed them to your husband?", further reinforcing the stereotype that a woman's role is to become married to serve and obey her husband so the man can become more a dominant and providing figure for their family. Since Nhamo's father is a likely figure he would look up to, he possibly played a part it forming Nhamo's sexist attitude. In addition, his mother is seen putting in extra effort to enable Nhamo to attend school, "She began to boil eggs, which she carried and sold...", this could make Nhamo feel as if he is extremely special, to be chosen to go to school, making him egotistical and providing him with evidence to tell himself, and others, how smart he ... • 36. Proper Role Of Government Essay What is the Proper Role of Government? The proper role of government (gov't.) can vary, every person has their opinion. The government's proper role is to solve universal problems without causing destruction. This means that the gov't. helps find a solution that is fair and equal for everyone. For example the government invented bimetallism to solve the problem with money. The government made changes to the way Native Americans lived so they became more "Americanized". The government also made the homestead act which helped people move westward. After the gov't. encouraged American citizens to move westward, they opened the door to immigrants. The U.S government has made such an impact on the way we live and how people did live in the old days. The proper role of the gov't. is to find solutions to the problems that humans cannot solve without having a excessive argument and without violating people's right. The government has dealt with the problem of backing up money. Bimetallism changed the currency from coins to paper money. Bimetallism meant that people would exchange gold or silver for money. One of the biggest concerns people had was that they wanted to make sure that the money would be backed up by a good source. Backing their money meant that people wouldn't have to deal with losing money when they would exchange money for gold or silver. People had debated whether they should back their money by bimetallism or monometallism. Monometalism is when money is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. What Role Did Railroad Play In Westward Expansion The Old West refers to any area west of the Mississippi River. Its era began in the early 19th century and ended in 1920 along with the Mexican revolution. The Old West was settled in numerous ways. Starting April 1, 1803, the Louisiana Purchase played a huge part in westward expansion. In this purchase, the U.S. gained approximately 828,000,000 square miles of land previously owned by France. This land extended from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. After the purchase, westward expansion immediately followed. With westward expansion came conflict. White Americans began to claim Native American territory as their own. Various treaties presented by the U.S. government to keep the peace were almost all broken by the government itself. With the Indian Removal Act of 1830, complete authority was given to the government to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beginning in 1848, gold was discovered in California. This discovery drew thousands of settlers to California in hopes of striking gold and becoming rich. Settlers were pouring in, and as a result towns were appearing overnight. These towns became known as Boom towns. Unfortunately, many of the settlers did not find gold. Most of the unfortunate settlers moved elsewhere to mine, leaving deserted towns behind. These deserted towns are called Ghost towns. In 1862, congress implemented the Homestead Act. This act stated that any American could claim up to 160 acres of government land for free. However, the land was only free if the owner built a home and grew crops. Small farmers mostly took advantage of this. The Homestead Act poured in many settlers to the West. The Old West was settled in many different ways. People from all different backgrounds came in hopes of striking gold, finding rich soil to farm on and for a fresh start. • 39. Tradition And Modernity In Tsitsi Dangarembga's 'Nervous... Early African Literature often puzzled the conflict between tradition and modernity. Western knowledge was almost automatically associated with modernity while tradition concerned itself with African cultures and/or histories, the latter often given less value, while Western knowledge was seen as the obvious path to success and advancement in life. In Nervous Conditions, Tsitsi Dangarembga presents this dichotomic association and exposes its toxicity through her main female characters' journeys. In the book, Tambu is plucked from her family with the opportunity of a colonial education and she is aware from the start that these are unique possibilities that will allow her to elevate her status. As the story progresses, the effects of Tambu's dissociation from the homestead start to present themselves and by the end of the novel, the loss of her culture is crippling. Nyasha undergoes a similar process growing up partly in England, away from her extended family and her culture. For Tambu, the harmful association of progress with Western values and culture is revealed through the juxtaposition of the description of her arrival at the mission in the beginning of her story and her arrival at the Sacred Heart at the end of the novel, as well as her reaction to the Christian wedding imposed to her parents by her uncle. For Nyasha, her breakdown at the end of the novel is representative of the toxic dichotomy of modernity and tradition within African literature. The implication ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
