Halfbrick is a mobile game developer founded in 2001 known for games like Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride. They have over 700 million downloads but face challenges recruiting talent due to skills shortages. To address this, Halfbrick launched an Academy program partnering with universities to train and potentially hire students. Two teams of 10 students each developed games over 3 months, resulting in 3 completed games. Three students from the program were subsequently hired by Halfbrick, a 50% higher success rate than their regular recruitment process. Going forward, Halfbrick is considering expanding the Academy program and partnering with startups to provide funding, services, and mentorship to help develop the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
